It's a brief introduction into the development of devops and a lot of complaining as to why people who are exploring or aren't exploring devops are dumb.

Should have been titled "Why is DevOps?"

One of the negative reviews did have a good point, that this essay comes off as a bit of a rant. But then why shouldn't it? Dealing with IT Operations, historically speaking, is usually a pain in the SCSI port. The real value being provided here isn't so much in telling you what DevOps is (which, to be honest, the subject is almost glossed over and only the main talking points are mentioned). No, the value is in telling you *why* DevOps was an inevitability, what purpose it serves today and what it is fixing.

If you read this and find yourself nodding your head, commiserating with the pain described by the author, maybe your shop is a candidate for a DevOps cultural transformation. And really, that's what it is, a cultural transformation. The technology is all for naught without it.

I'm reading this from the perspective of an operations team leader, and of someone successfully affecting a DevOps business transformation in a software development shop.

Beginning to think about and understand what DevOps actually means...

O'Reilly produces some useful (and short) ebook reports that help clarify and educate those of us in the tech industry. I just finished What is DevOps? - Infrastructure as Code by Mike Loukides, and it fits squarely in that "short ebook" category. In fact, you could make the argument that this is really a long blog post instead of an ebook, since it's only around 16 pages. But when the price is free, why quibble over semantics?

Loukides makes the argument that the NoOps movement is a misnomer. The function of Operations in a company such as Netflix or Amazon still continues to exist regardless of what might be inferred otherwise. The more relevant question is centered around what Operations actually means in the current technology state. Loukides states that the Operations team and the Development team become more closely allied, so that applications can take full advantage of PaaS (Platform as a Service). This adds redundancy and resiliency as core elements of an application, as opposed to just tossing the application over the fence for someone else to worry about if something goes wrong.

What Is DevOps? is by no means an exhaustive examination of the DevOps topic. At 16 pages, it's barely enough to get started. However, it *is* enough to get you thinking in the right direction, and provides the start of a framework for you to "know what you don't know". It's worth the few minutes (and no cost) to download and read.

"This book is aimed at undergraduates and is what it suggests in the introduction 'a straightforward approach' to anatomy and physiology. It is simplistic, and in places reminiscent of A-level text. However where the book doesn't deliver in depth of knowledge it surpasses itself in the illustrations. The chapter on the nervous system, has excellent informative diagrams where even the plexus appear understandable even to a novice. This is the book's strength and as a reference tool for patients would be helpful.�For qualified physiotherapists most chapters are basic; for example the musculoskeletal section. Within this chapter the diagrams are not detailed enough which is not the case in other sections. I wonder whether this is representative of the authors' backgrounds in nursing and biomedical science as the segments relating to physiology are written with confidence. One aspect which I was interested in was the book blurb claiming "new sections on the implications of normal ageing on structure and function of body systems" (whether or not this was due to passing a birthday milestone I cannot possibly comment), which was a disappointment (the book not the birthday). A short paragraph at the end of each chapter with bon mots such as 'loss of teeth may cause difficulty chewing' (pg 318) does not constitute a 'section', or at least not a section worth promoting. Before this book is tossed into the reject pile, the e-resources must be considered. Any educational book worth its marketing budget must incorporate e-learning and this book is no exception. To be honest, let's be thankful that it has. Easy to access, clear navigation and adding so much more to the book makes the on-line resource impressive and relevant; as a revision aid, a reference tool for you and patients. There are animations, drop and drag quizzes, case studies which make you think, "this information was in the book?”, clear (and much more detailed) interactive anatomy diagrams and all the book illustrations which you are able to save. The possibilities for patient education suddenly become more accessible and immediate than random searches through Internet engines. It also appears that once logged in this resource is free at http:evolve.elsevier.com/Waugh/anatomy so you don't have to purchase the book. Answering the question "is this a book for private physiotherapists?" I would suggest not. It would look pretty on the bookshelf, it has excellent and clear diagrams, however, at �32 I would invest in something else. Would I recommend accessing the e-learning resources? Yes."

...for the most part it is an easy to read nicely illustrated book

For the price you get a lot, especially with the online animations and such. It is a bit frustrating of a read when terminology is used the first time without an explanation or definition given. The glossary is limited and should be significantly expanded. However, for the most part it is an easy to read nicely illustrated book.

Despite Bernadette Dunne's considerable efforts, the reading drags from time to time. Mark Bramhall only voices the prologue; the remainder of the book belongs to Dunne, who ably evokes both genders and is particularly skilled with New England accents. Dark, disturbing, completely gripping

This is a dark, disturbing novel that was difficult to put down. I thought Brundage tackled some heavy issues in her debut novel, The Doctor's Wife, but she took on an even more massive load in Somebody Else's Daughter. Adoption, alcoholism, drug addiction, pornography, sexual abuse, murder, AIDS, prostitution, adultery. Thanks to Brundage's skill as an author, there is a lot going on, but it doesn't overwhelm. She slowly weaves together seemingly disparate story lines and characters in a masterful way that never fails to leave me in awe of her talent as a storyteller.

What I love about Brundage is how she sets up her story. She takes her time, slowly creating a sense of place and developing her characters superbly. All of this is imbued with a subtle, underlying sense of suspense. I find myself reading her opening chapters with relish, knowing that she is building, gradually and deliberately, a gripping crescendo.

A distinct difference between this novel and Brundage's debut, for me, was the likability of the characters. Though The Doctor's Wife held me in its grip, I struggled to truly like any of the characters, despite the fact that they were extremely well-developed. Reading Somebody Else's Daughter, I found it easy to love several characters. Willa was conflicted and sensitive, spurning many of the elitist attitudes she had been raised in the midst of. Several of the characters - Willa's adoptive parents, Claire the feminist sculptor, Claire's pot-smoking son Teddy - were flawed but basically, in the end, good people. And Willa's biological father, Nate, well, I kind of fell in love with him ... a struggling writer with a past, he was handsome, passionate, wise, and sensitive - a perfect hero.

Thought Provoking Literary Novel Disguised as a Thriller

From the very first page I was completely caught up in the lives of these characters. This is a novel about several families who are challenged by frustrating times. The story revolves around a group of people who are involved with a private school in the Berkshires. Nate, a recovered heroin addict and struggling writer, returns to the town where he had given up his baby in a private adoption seventeen years before. He is an interesting and likable character who is anxious to find resolution in his life. Other characters come into his life, including his biological daughter, Willa. I don't want to say too much to give the story away, but I became a fan of this writer when I read her first book and I was very happily surprised by this one, which is just as gripping, but somehow even more intense. I highly recommend it. If you like thrillers, but also like good literary fiction,this is a combination of both. Read it!

I read Somebody Else's Daughter in one sitting last night, pulling my first all-nighter since college; I literally couldn't get to sleep without knowing what was going to happen.

I found the novel thrilling, suspenseful, and incredibly well written. The detail involved in depicting each character's inner thoughts and differing assessments of various situations ws truly fantastic. I'm an avid reader and I can't remember the last time I was this wowed by a novel.

A great contribution to understanding Richard Rorty

Tartaglia's book is especially impressive for one reason; it is one of the first obviously non-partisan discussions on Rorty to appear. Rorty was such an iconoclast in the last years of his life and in the few years following his death, that nearly all discussion of him was highly partisan. All of it took him seriously of course, crude dismissials of Rorty don't need the length and sophistication that print allows. But still, you had to be either for him or against him, and that was a stark difference. Tartaglia's project is different, it is to simply understand him, and it deftly puts off the task of taking sides. Reading this book, it becomes clear just how hard it can be to understand everything Rorty is saying, including the great breadth of his knowledge and the diversity of his influences and references. Only when one has really mastered all these angles can one finally take a side, and that is something Tartaglia seems to leave to the reader.

Great resource for HR professionals!!!

This really is an answer book! It covers in depth answers to core HR policies and procedures in just about every aspect of HR. Oh and did you know that it also qualifies for recertification credits if you're a SHRM-certified professional? Yes, that's right. This book is worth 3 recertification credits if you take an online quiz (SHRM eLearning) after reading it. Visit the SHRM store for details but the books are usually significantly cheaper here on Amazon. I'm a certified SHRM member so I will definitely be doing that. You're welcome.
