About the Author
A true pioneer in the field of study skills, Dr. Walter Pauk has been dispensing common-sense advice to students for more than half a century. Pauk led the way in advocating the now popular wide margin note-taking strategy commonly known as the Cornell System. A licensed psychologist and trusted teacher, Pauk was director of the Reading-Study Center at Cornell University, where he earned his PhD in Psychology and Education and remains Professor Emeritus. He is the author of more than 100 books.

Improving Reading Comprehension

As a teacher, I have used this book in a small-group setting and in one-on-one tutoring, and I was quite impressed. Students who are struggling with reading comprehension frequently get discouraged and quit trying, and they fall farther behind their peers each year of school. The concepts in the "Six-Way" series are based on an easily understood structure, the break-down of information into small, non-intimidating segments, and repetition of these concepts until satisfactorily reinforced. I have recommended this book to many parents, with the caveat that most students will not complete the series on their own, but will need a parent or teacher to walk them through it.

Six-Way Paragraphs

The reader friendly instructions for teacher and student are explicit and make a logical argument for how reading comprehension should be taught. The different readability levels of the included passages will help me differentiate and guide my instruction as well as meet standards. Can't wait to get started on lessons for my struggling readers!
