I loved it to bits! GAH!

This book has overtaken my life for the last few days, and I don’t have the words to praise it enough!

I’m familiar with the author’s previous work, so I was expecting a sexy, fast-paced and soul-cheering read, but this book has exceeded all my expectations.

Lewis is a freshman starting his literature studies in Bristol. He shares a flat with three other students, and among piles of dirty dishes, instant noodles, and loads of booze he tries to find his own place in the new, adult world. He also discovers his own sexuality, very different to what he’s thought.

This story is perceptive, offering very real insight into the world of young students, their emotions and dilemmas, and the painful, often confusing act that is falling in love. Growing up in Not Just Friends is about little dramas, and more serious problems. It’s about trying new things, finding out shocking truths about your family, and losing part of your childhood innocence. But it’s also about putting your life into perspective against other people’s problems, learning to behave like an adult, hurting others and trying hard not to hurt them more, and moving on. Jay Northcote also tackles important myths about being gay, and how it can sometimes be perceived by peers.

This all might sound really serious, but this book is a heartwarming, very well written, light read with tons of pining and incredibly hot sex. Seriously, all the kissing and sex scenes in this one are hot! The events in this book will linger in your mind long after you put it down. You’ll remember your own youth, with all of its crushes, and grin like an idiot for the next few days!

I loved it to bits. A must-read.

A Sweet Romance Without Too Much Angst

Not Just Friends is perfect if you want to take a break from the drama, angst, and emotional roller coaster that is sometimes present in many m/m romances. While there is a little bit of conflict, the story mostly focuses on Lewis, a University freshman, becoming attracted to his flatmate Max and subsequently realizing he's gay and finally understanding why his attempts to be with girls, especially his previous long-term girlfriend, didn't do anything for him. They can't immediately begin a relationship, however, because (1) Lewis isn't out yet and isn't sure how to initiate anything with Max; and (2) while the two eventually do foray a little into romance territory, they're afraid it was influenced by Max's fresh breakup and a little alcohol and don't want to ruin their friendship by rushing into something that Max isn't sure Lewis is ready for. As the book goes on, we see Lewis trying to balance his growing feelings for Max against his promise to remain just friends. Along the way Lewis is faced with some family drama that further adds to his stresses, but with the support of newly found friends and his own quiet yet solid determination, Lewis forges a happy ending for himself that will leave readers content and satiated.

Max and Lewis are great for each other. Lewis's reticent, overall laid-back demeanor is the perfect contrast to Max's unabashedly outspoken personality. I loved watching their interactions: Max's cautious and subtle flirting and Lewis's surreptitious glances at Max when he thinks no one's looking, as well as Lewis's covert jealousy at other guys flirting with Max. Their relationship is handled very realistically and I loved how during the sex scenes, Max was very aware of Lewis's inexperience, going slow and frequently asking if it was okay to do something before he actually did it. It felt more realistic and was a sweet distinction that isn't present in many m/m romances. The other characters were enjoyable as well; it was easy to like the good ones and fun to hate the bad ones. The writing was engaging and, as I mentioned earlier, there isn't too much angst so the reading isn't heavy or laborious. Like another reviewer said, this does read very much like a slice of life novel with many scenes depicting things like parties, watching movies in the bedroom, and sitting around having conversations, but each setting did move the story further so they weren't irrelevant.

Not Just Friends is a nice, sweet read with two adorable main characters. And I know this has no bearing on the plot or substance of the story, but I just want to commend the cover designer for the gorgeous models and romantic sensuality of their pose. Okay, that aside, if you enjoy light, well-written novels with a University setting and/or m/m books that center around a character discovering his homosexuality then this is definitely a title you want to check out.

What a wonderful story! It is truly a sweet coming of age tale. Lewis is off to "uni" for the first time, and has to share a flat with 4 other guys, one of whom is out and proud Max. Lewis is straight, but he finds himself irresistably drawn to Max, which confuses and scares him, as he doesn't understand what his feelings for Max are all about. As the story progresses, Lewis' feelings for Max intensify, and there is a slow back and forth between them. It really is a book for anyone who enjoys a warm, tender love story...a book that left (leaves) me smiling with a warm feeling inside. Highly enjoyable, highly recommended. I will be rereading "Not Just Friends", and hope for a sequel to see how our two guys are doing down the road. And I am really beginning to love Jay Northcote!

Very funny

This is a rather unusual book, with all manner of everyday and bizarre sayings nicely translated into Latin for your amusement/education/use at a dinner party. Just as with his very funny "French for Cats", the real humour lies in the really odd things he has taken the time to translate - things like "I believe that Elvis is still alive".
It is a good fun coffee table book, and a must for any serious collector of great humour books.

A fun book...

This book is a fun book to keep on hand.

Most of the phrases are bizarre...like Sometimes I get this urge to conquer large parts of europe (interdum feror cupidine partium magnarum Europae vincendarum)but it is still a fun book.

I especially enjoy throwing in some latin phrases in email correspondence with friends to keep them guessing.

Illud iterum dicere potes!

This wonderful little book was presented to me many years ago after I had completed a Latin seminar. It was a wonderful gift, and I have found much use for the various phrases, and an extraordinary amount of humour that can be derived from the blandest of statements when translated into Latin. For example, the innocuous phrase 'Darn! There goes my beeper!' becomes quite funny in Latin:
Heu! Tintinnuntius meus sonat!
One has visions of Caesar fumbling through his tunic for some beeping object.
So, if you need a little Latin on the golf course (Alterum ictum faciam); on the tennis court (minime latum!), at the beach when spotting a shark (Pistrix! Pistrix!), or you just need to say Illud Latine dici non potest (you can't say that in Latin), you'll be prepared with this volume.
It even comes with a section on what to say when at the Vatican (where it might truly come in handy). For instance you might need to say 'Ubi possum potiri petasi similis isti?' when passing a cardinal or nun (translation: Where can I get a hat like that?).
So, don't waste your time on watching reruns of Insula Gilliganis or game shows such as Periculum and Rota Fortunae -- pick up this book today, and merge the worlds past and present.

Excellent information,

Well, it is a very good book indeed, where the information is clear and the aouthors exposed their experience in terms of knowlodge. I want more informaion about molds, likea aluminium alloys, sands and plaster information. Finally, it is a book that give you very good information.

Does a great job!

I bought this for my modalities class, and it does a good job explaining all of the modalities and physiology behind them. There are nice summary boxes along the way that save you time if you can't read in depth before class. It also explains some of the controversies with each modality along the way, so it helps with decision making.

It's often a harrowing tale: born in 1962, Chen was the grandson of a landlord, which rendered his entire family pariahs during the Cultural Revolution. And though initially an excellent student, he was ostracized in school and told he could never attend college. He responded by making friends with a group of young thugs who drank, smoked, and gambled but were kind to him. After Mao died in 1976, the budding juvenile delinquent discovered that higher education might be available to him after all. Chen worked hard to make up for years of neglected studies, and his memoir closes with a jubilant scene as he and his brother Jin are both accepted into college; for his suffering family, "thirty years of humiliation had suddenly come to an end." Chen's lucid yet emotional prose unsparingly portrays a topsy-turvy society where unfairness reigns and the rules are arbitrarily changed without warning, but his zest for life and sharp eye for character make even the most awful moments grimly funny. The grandchild of a former landlord--China's most spat-upon class after the Revolution--Chen was regularly beaten to a pulp by other children and, despite performing at the top of his class, repeatedly denied the right to continue at school. His family of nine--including his brother, three sisters, grandparents and parents--subsisted on moldy yams alone for entire winters. Meanwhile, his grandfather was attacked randomly by neighbors and forced by the local authorities to guard lumber and tend fields. Chen's father, with his prerevolutionary college education, eventually managed to extract himself from the labor camps by becoming skilled in acupuncture (he used the biggest needles on the hated "cadres"). At the climax of this survival story, Chen, the book's first-person narrator, and his older brother, Jin, both compete in China's first nationwide, open educational tests in 1977: "We were out to make a point. The Chen family had been dragged through the mud for the last forty years.... Now it was time." Scoring among the top 2% of the country, the 14-year-old Chen achieved his dream of attending Beijing Language Institute. According to the epilogue, after graduating with high honors, he wound up in New York at age 23, where he won a scholarship to attend Columbia Law School, and later landed a job on Wall Street and married a doctor. Despite the devastating circumstances of his childhood and adolescence, Chen recounts his coming of age with arresting simplicity. Over the past few years, Chinese memoirs dealing with adolescence in Communist China, written mostly by women who subsequently moved to the United States, have proliferated. These include Anchee Min's Red Azalea, Jaia Sun-Childers's The White-Haired Girl: Bittersweet Adventures of a Little Red Soldier, and Rae Yang's Spider Eaters. This work, written by a young man who came of age after the Cultural Revolution, is similar in some respects: Chen's bourgeois family was persecuted by the state, and he eventually left China to live in the United States. But Chen's story is different from the others because he grew up in rural, not urban, China. It carries an easily recognizable theme (boy falls in with hoodlums, then pulls himself up to succeed against all odds), which is at once uplifting and unsatisfying. Chen, who attended Columbia University Law School on a full scholarship and has worked on Wall Street, has written a clear and fast-moving book, but readers looking for either a modest narrator or a way to make sense of recent events in China will be disappointed.APeggy Spitzer Christoff, Oak Park, IL

a moving autobiography.

A writer living in New York, Da Chen describes the harrowing tale of his youth when his family suffers untold misery during the Cultural Revolution. Ostracized for being a landlord’s grandson, Da Chen has to leave school and can take up education again only after Chairman Mao’s death, when the humiliation finally ends.

Captivating Memoir

Author Da Chen writes an interesting semi-autobiographical novel of his years growing up during Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution. He narrates his rise from the persecuted landlord class up into the revered educated class during one of China's most turbulent periods. More interesting, though, is the glimpse we get of the madness that pervaded China during that time. Educated and skilled city workers were forced en masse out to the countryside to work the farmlands. Farmers and peasants were sent into the cities to run the schools and bureaucracy. Inevitable chaos ensured. Yet, life goes on and some people, like Chen, still managed to triumph through the struggles and sufferings.

I would agree that Chen's perspectives on historical events may not have been totally objective or acurate. But the ease and warmth in which he recounts his own story makes "Colors of the Mountain" both captivating and inspiring. I liked it.

An interesting story of what life was like after Mao's introduction of the Communist Party to China, written by a young man full of spirit and will who was determined to succeed in the educational system which prevailed at the advent of Communism, in spite of all that he was up against. Enjoyable and well written. Never bitter about everything that happened to him, he took the lemons life handed him and made lemonade.
