About the Author
Robert T. Ratay, Ph.D., P.E., is a highly regarded structural engineer and former university professor with an extensive background in both design and failure analysis. His nearly four decades of professional experience is divided almost equally between structural engineering practice, and combined teaching and consulting. Ratay worked with such prominent firms as Le Messurier Associates, Severud Associates, and HNTB. He was a Professor and Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department, then Dean of the School of Engineering at Pratt Institute, and a Professor at Polytechnic University (formerly Brooklyn Polytech). His current practice in forensic structural engineering is directed toward the investigation of structural and construction failures, providing expert consultant services to architects, engineers, contractors, owners, attorneys, insurance companies, and government agencies. Dr. Ratay is a Fellow of ASCE, has chaired several of its technical committees, and currently serves on the Executive Committee of its Structural Engineering Institute. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the authoritative Handbook of Temporary Structures in Construction published by McGraw-Hill.

About the Author

David Rieske is an industrial engineer and has worked in manufacturing in the areas of production and health and safety.  During this time, he gained valuable experience in the identification and reduction/elimination of hazards through engineering applications.  David teaches at the University of Arkansas while also working in the pharmaceutical industry.

 

Dr. C. Ray Asfahl is Emeritus Professor of Industrial Engineering at University of Arkansas. He is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Safety Professional. With over 35 years experience in Industrial Safety he has served as Industrial Consultant in most of the 50 states. He has served on the Standards Development Committee of the American Society of Safety Engineers. His books, in seven editions in English, are in use throughout the world. Some editions of his books have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Korean.

UGH. It is misprinted-missing info.

this book has many errors. It had pages 53-68 duplicated and left pages 69-84 out. I can not take test without all the info covered. The contents page states that I am missing hazard-classification scale. That is what I have found thus far. Only two weeks into 8 week course. NOT happy at all.

I could not stop laughing, and I am a 51 year old woman!!

This is next only to Sherman Alexie's Absolutely True Tales of a Part Time Indian. It is laugh out loud funny. When Jake met the knitting boy I could not stop laughing. This is shockingly well-written. I do not care who you are. Seriously, buy this book. I do not know Jake, I live in Newfoundland , Canada, but Bravo! I cannot wait for the next book. Are you sure you are 13? You must have truly amazing parents. What a lucky boy to have a sister who is such a "worthy nemesis". Good for you! I hope you sell a million copies!

So funny! Perfect for tweens

I am not a youngster myself but read this book after seeing Jake's interview on CBS news....I was reviewing to make
sure it was good for my niece's 10 year old son, I ended up reading cover to cover and laughing a little myself!
Definitely recommend for any age!

Great book! Hilariously funny!

Just Jake, a book targeted to kid’s ages 8 to 14, has hit the bull’s-eye. Just Jake is a novel based on true experiences. The author, Jake Marcionette, knows about moving around and trying to stay in touch with school. He has moved many times in his thirteen year life, living in such places as Singapore, New York, Tennessee, Maryland, and Florida. But don’t let that fool you into thinking he is just your standard genius. Jake is a normal kid. He likes to watch baseball and plays lacrosse and basketball. Jake understands what it is like to try to fit in. He can relate to what you or your child faces at school.
Just Jake is a book that will entertain your kids. Jake tells about the kids he encounters at school and how he deals with them. In the book he makes kid cards (kind of like baseball cards with kids instead of players) that describe the people he meets. Unfortunately the cards fall into the wrong hands and get him in a lot of trouble. I could not unglue my eyes from the book to find out how Jake gets out of this dilemma and others including his sister, Alexis. By the way, I am a 13 year old reader who has met the real life Jake.

Gives an inkling of what the pioneers, and a little horse, went through to stay and survive

The target age group for PAINT is 9-12; but I really enjoyed the story, and I certainly think that teens and adults will get a lot from this book. Set in the late 1800s in North America, it follows a little horse through a series of owners. Paint was rescued by a Lakota boy, Noisy Horse, after her injured mother is attacked by wolves. She is a smart little filly and learns very quickly what her role is going to be as she lives with the Lakota people learning to hunt buffalo; and also learning how to be a boss mare. Life seems good, but history has a habit of disturbing life, and the white man moved in without care or regard of the different tribal lands and traditions of their new land, which resulted in the Indigenous people being moved out – often forcibly with guns pointed at them. Paint is separated from Noisy Horse when the soldiers move in to take the Lakota people to a government run reservation. From here she runs through a series of owners and horse sellers, both good and bad, until she ends up with a pioneer family on the Canadian Prairie. Paint’s ultimate fate was a bit ambiguous as it wasn’t very clear to me what happened to her after the big climax – my guesses could go either way – but would have liked closure to that thread.

Paints isn’t the only point of view given – some of the other character’s give their points of view of the events and at the end Noisy Horse returns to his homeland with his granddaughter and tries to explain to her what happened and why remembering the events is important even though she didn’t experience them. He does this so that the people’s traditions can live on in memory if not practice, and maybe understand how their current lifestyle came about. Younger readers may struggle a bit with the last chapter, as it often comes across as a little bit of a sermon on the loss of rights, but is true and needs to be told.

Author, Jennifer Dance, is a very gifted story teller and her written descriptions of the land, the harshness of the pioneer life, and how in their ignorance the early pioneers destroyed the balance of nature resulting in huge natural disasters are so good that the events just come alive on the pages. People and animals die in the story – that is a harsh fact of life – and add long droughts, and endless blizzards and you get an inkling of what the pioneers went through to stay and survive.

It is so easy to tell that Jennifer did whole lot of meticulous research into the story. The world changing events that happened both to nature and the indigenous peoples in the lifetime of one horse makes the mind boggle.

At the very end of the story is an appendix with a historical timeline, glossary and more detail about some of the events mentioned during the story.

Last year I read Jennifer’s debut novel Red Wolf and it was one of my top 10 reads for 2014. PAINT doesn’t quite grab me the same way – but I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical novels, or are trying to explain that period of time to younger readers.

Paint by Jennifer Dance is a touching story of a horse that lived in the 1800's. Paint was orphaned and found by a Lakota boy and their connection is deep. They are separated when the U.S. Cavalry raids the Lakota camp and Paint begin her journey with various owners, including settlers of the Canadian plains. Ultimately this book is about the destruction of the Aboringinal People's in Canada. From the start I loved Paint; a gentle, social and smart horse. Ms Dance descriptions of Paint and Noise Horse, her first owner was lyrical and the horrors of their brutal separation vividly described. The descriptions of the land, the harshness of the settler life were engrossing and real. An ex cellent, descriptive and gratifying read. I read this book in one sitting and thought about Paint for days after. Thank you Netgalley for giving me this opportunity to review this book.

An important book, that should be read by everybody.

Jennifer Dance wrote a book that manages to portray our history with a horse as the main character. The concept is amazing, and the execution of that concept is masterful. As a story about a horse, this is a great book, but there is so much more, and the book goes so much deeper, that it becomes a history lesson and a commentary on what we did (do) to the land and the people on it.

If there is one question that has preoccupied humanity since the beginning of consciousness, it has to be this one: Are we truly alone in the universe? Shostak, senior astronomer for the SETI Institute, thinks the odds are against it. As the public face of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), Shostak is optimistic about the possibility of life on other planets. His latest book is chock-full of statistics and speculation that add up to a fairly convincing argument. He proposes, for example, that by taking into account the glut of newly discovered planets in orbit around faraway stars and making a few scientific extrapolations, we can conclude that the universe is teeming with planets possessing the conditions necessary for life. The problem then becomes one of communication. Shostak believes the answer lies in listening for radio signals, and he presents a lively history of radio astronomy. He touches on other topics—microwaves, quasars, pulsars, and UFO sightings—and imbues them all with his trademark humor. Readable and engaging, despite the presence of some weighty, scientific material. --Jerry Eberle

Dispels the Hollywood Myths

This is not everyone's cup of tea, but if your idea of a Sunday afternoon is sitting around with a scientist shooting the breeze, talking about the possibility of alien intelligence existing out there somewhere, then you'll love this book. It's everything you wanted to ask after watching the movie Contact (written by Carl Sagan, starring Jode Foster), but never knew who to ask.

Hollywood gets it all spectacularly wrong, which makes for great movies but also means our collective public awareness of this area of science is lousy.

And there's some great insights. At one point Seth points out that if our galaxy were a haystack and we were searching for a needle (representing intelligent aliens), then SETI estimate that there could be thousands of needles but, so far, all we've been able to do is to examine a tablespoon's worth of hay. It's no wonder we've come up empty handed, but if we keep proding around, we will get pricked by a needle sooner or later.

For a science buff, this book is a must.

In buying this book, I thought I was getting a work devoted to SETI. Of course, I expected it to cover other things, but I never thought the SETI topic itself would be taking a back seat. Mostly, Shostak talks about the history of astronomy, UFOs, and other forms of pseudoscience. I could see why he included those things, but not why they dominated so much of the book. Another annoyance was his use of monotonous, unhumorous, and endless metaphors, which plagued the book throughout. Also, the chapters were exceedingly long, and he rambled on and on about different things so much that I forgot what the subject was to begin with.
I did learn some cool things, though. I never knew, for example, that radio waves transmit better through hydrogen clouds, or that the Drake equation assumes all civilizations stay on their home planet.
Now don't get me wrong, Confessions was a thought-provoking and informative work, I did enjoy it. But the excess baggage brought it down significantly.

I do believe, I do, I do... (Serious cred for a fascinating subject!)

Love Seth's podcast "Big Picture Science" and his take on "Things ET." This book is an informative, thought provoking look as the history, challenges and potential of human's striving for that "first contact" moment that has SCIENCE written all over it. Just to mention for those who enjoy this stuff, Joel Achenbach's "Captured By Aliens" is also a great book, written with wry wit and fun prose (which Seth haseth also) such that these two should be side by side on your bookshelf or sharing ram in your reading device.
