Alan Northcott is a successful financial author, freelance writer, trading educator, professional engineer, karaoke jockey, and wedding officiant, along with other pursuits. He and his wife live in Florida, and they share their house with many dogs and cats. They have three children living on three different continents, and two grandchildren. He has the unusual claim of having married his own son (see above if you don’t understand). Originating from England, Northcott was educated at Eltham College in London and obtained his degree from the University of Surrey, also in England. He immigrated with his wife to America in 1992. His engineering career spanned more than 30 years, on both sides of the Atlantic, and he has actively pursued his second career of writing since the mid-90s. Excellent Coverage of Key Concepts from Basic to Advanced

This is an exceptionally well-written, comprehensive course on technical analysis. I've read several books on this subject and I've always struggled with certain key concepts that are often mired in ill-explained mathematical minutia. Although, I'm an experienced trader, I learned a great deal from this book. It is a wonderful resource for a beginner, and has a good deal to offer even more sophisticated investors. If you want to understand technical analysis, this book is a great place to start.

Great All-Around Primer!

This is a really good book for several reasons. It's one of the few that take you all the way from starting with no idea what technical analysis is (or even trading for that matter), all the way up to locked, cocked, loaded and ready to trade. I think after you trade for a while you forget just how daunting those first few steps can be for many people.

I've always been more of a technical trader (as opposed to trading fundamentals), it's a way of thinking I was first exposed to as a teenager, and using this perspective I was able to trade futures with a fair degree of success. Since then I've also traded stocks and Forex this way, and I've found that many of these techniques hold-up in, well, any market really.

This book covers a lot of ground, from understanding markets and their trends, older techniques such as moving averages, candlesticks, trend patterns, etc... and also using more advanced analysis techniques available with most modern trading software. It's a lot, but it's written in a highly accessible, no-nonsense language that reflects the considerable amount of experience of the author. I found it to be a nice refresher.

I don't think this book is really aimed at seasoned traders; it's quite broad, I think seasoned traders wouldn't get a whole lot from it, although I could be wrong about that, I guess I'm just speaking for myself. I will say that if you are just getting started however this book is pure gold, it basically hands you everything to enter the market and not lose your butt!

Alan Northcott is a brilliant financial author with an in-depth knowledge of the financial markets. His latest book "Mastering Technical Analysis" is a superb example of his love and knowledge of everything financial. I first became aware of Alan's expertise of the financial markets by reading his." Newbies Guides To Financial Series", Forex Guide, Option Guide, Stocks Guide and Technical Analysis Guide. In his newest book "Mastering Technical Analysis" the author writes about the many aspects of analyzing the financial markets.

Trading the markets is complex, in this book the author describes various principles of technical analysis, tenets of trading, methods of charting, trend following concepts, reversal and continuation trend patterns, volume and price gaps, moving averages, oscillating and sentiment indicators and so much more. There are chapters on price patterns, risk management, Forex, Stocks, Options and the Futures markets. Overall it is a tremendous book on technical analysis and I am sure I will use it for years to come not only as a guide but as a reference source.

As interesting as a textbook can conceivably be given the dry subject matter

Had some interesting correlations and anecdotes to make the many mundane facts and details more memorable than they would have otherwise been. The many diagrams and illustrations also served this purpose, and were very detailed and accurate.

Handbook of Practical Electrical Design

The McGraw-Hill cover misrepresents this book. It may preach to the choir but makes no converts. Concepts are long, obscure or ignored. The print is tight and some tables are not legible in places. The reader will learn little. Pedagogy is not the authors' strength. Having learned the basics of electricity in school I hoped for some of what the publisher promises, but was very dissappointed and 60 bucks poorer. Avoid my mistake.

I haven't spent too much time in the book. The 2 times I referenced it I was not impressed. I think it is geared more towards a beginner Engineer that has little knowledge of electrical systems and more of a colligate background dealing with electrical theory.The book seemed old and outdated. You would be better off with just a NEC Hankbook.

Really Bad Experience

No, it did not. We submitted a request to return it, but never heard anything back from the store it came from...we won't be doing that again. The book was written by an electrician...definitely not a PE.

What an incredible story of belief in fate and ultimately a calling. Ari's story, though heroic, spoke more to me about his journey to why g-d spared his life that day and what g-d's compassion meant to him about a higher calling. Being such a passionate man for judaism and faith Ari realizes that even spending hours daily in prayer before Sept 11 2001 he was really just going through the motions and that in the end was cheating himself of his true meaning of what role g-d and faith play in his everyday life. This is not a story about religion per se but is more about encouragement to all individuals to find their higher purpose in life and to set their priorities in order and putting family first. Ari Schonbrun has worked on Wall Street since 1981 and has been with Cantor Fitzgerald since 1993. He now speaks nationally and internationally about the events and the lessons from 9/11. Ari currently lives in Cedarhurst with his wife Joyce and they are the proud parents of five children.

Very Moving; Strong and Uplifting

I just finished Miracles and Fate on 78. I am not afraid to say that I am acquainted with the author. I honestly did not know what to expect from the book. It was the first recounting I have read about Sept 11th so immediately from the first few pages, I was really afraid of my emotions. I, like most, avoid reliving that day. We do not want to revisit the sadness or despair. We forget that real miracles occurred that same day. This book reminds you of that. It reminds you of what life is all about. It is a strong, uplifting, deeply moving message that bears reminding. I will recommend it to my family and fiends. Thanks for sharing this story!

Miracles & Fate on 78

If you think you've heard it all before when it comes to September 11, 2001, you haven't. Part of this story is a gripping thriller involving real people and how they escaped the World Trade Center. In the details of that story were many points that I never knew in spite of having devoured the news at the time. But there's more. There's more in the humanity, not only demonstrated by the author himself and the countless people who helped him, but in businesses and institutions that stepped up to the plate to help families of survivors. As tragic and disturbing as it is to relive that black day, this book serves as a reminder of not only the ugly but the good that humanity is capable of.

Inspirational, unbelievable story that's a very quick (and amazing) read

An incredibly moving story that I hadn't heard before about 9/11. The story is unbelievable. The book is a very quick read, maybe 1-3 hours, but I would highly recommend it.

The author, an orthodox Jew, connects the events to his beliefs in an honest way that doesn't sound trite. His story helped me think about my own life and how I might have reacted under the same circumstances and whether my faith would be as strong as his.

Art of the Formula 1 Race Car Is a Great Book

First of all, I must admit that I am not objective about this book because my son was its editor. On the other hand, I have followed and read about Formula 1 racing for forty years and this is one of the best books I have seen. The basic concept is to show the beauty of Formula 1 car designs. To do this, photographer James Mann shot eighteen cars in studios around the UK. The photographic emphasis is on both the overall chassis design as well as details of the engines, driver's compartments, etc. All of Mann's photographs are beautiful. In addition there are historical photos from the era of each car. The cars range from the Alfa Romeo of the first F1 season, 1950, to the McLaren MP4-23 of 2008. Thus it covers the entire Formula 1 era. The text is by Stuart Codling, a highly regarded UK based motorsports journalist. In addition, there is commentary by former Formula 1 designer Gordon Murray. The sum of all of these contributions is a one-of-a-kind book that is both very beautiful to look at and also a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend it.

The first user review says that the technical summaries are "fraught with errors". Well, there are exactly two errors. On page 95, the engine displacement should be 2,993 cc rather than 3,993; and on page 170, the year for the Jordan 191 should be 1991 rather than 1981 (the correct year is included in Codling's main text however).

Great book, more than what I expected. One of the nicest books I have gotten lately.

Unique and valuable portrayal of girls in Ghana

Human Mules is Carol Larratt’s memoir of her years of studying a unique phenomenon in Ghana: the Kaya (Carrier) Girls. These girls come from the north of Ghana where they have almost no opportunities for schooling or jobs. Most have to settle for the drudgery of early marriages. Instead, the flock to the South, mostly Accra, and work as head porters. They are not street children, but sleep in the street and the markets. They have interesting ways of organizing their lives and surviving, many with babies in tow. Larratt has written her book with honesty and compassion. It reads like a memoir, sometimes a novel – always compelling. She enters a little-known world and explores it in great depth, often putting herself at risk. She represents the Kaya Girls’ situation with multiplicity and is non-judgemental in her presentation. The book is compelling as the reader follows several of the girls over a number of years – I did not want to put this book down and was sorry when it ended. For those who love West Africa, Ghana, northern Ghana, Accra, international development, education of the girl child – this book is for you. It is sad, sometimes shocking, but also offers hope. It shows true resilience in the face of discrimination and abject poverty. Well done to Larratt for such an ambitious labour of love which has added considerably to literature on the plight of the girl child in Africa.
