Louise Bourgeois: The Secret of the Cells is both a catalog of works by and a biography of the famous Parisian artist. Born in 1911, the now-octogenarian Bourgeois has shown widely throughout the world and to great critical acclaim, especially within the last decade. Bourgeois's personal history is vastly important in the content of her work, and this book takes readers on a journey from her affluent childhood in France, including family photographs, to her schooling under painter Fernand L�ger to her eventual marriage and move to the United States, where she continued her long and varied career working primarily as a sculptor and installation artist.

Bourgeois's abstract figurative sculptures range in materials from plaster, marble, and bronze to the more nontraditional latex, glass, thread, etc. Regardless of the medium, the work is imbued with a strong physicality that echoes the forms of the human body. Included in the book are discussions of Bourgeois's work in relation to other artists and movements such as Rodin, Brancusi, and primitivism. Bourgeois has been an inspiration to an entire generation of artists, not just because of her long and illustrious career but because her work has pushed so many boundaries. Beautiful representation of an amazing body of work

Of the many Bourgeois books I've seen this has the best illustrations of some of her most compelling work. Most publishers have focused more on her history and little on her current work. Installation work really must be seen to be experienced but the photography of this book captures the colors and emotions held within each cell. I highly recomend it.

Merz does it again.

The 6th full length novel in the Lawson Vampire series delivers all the fun and excitement of the previous and more. Lawson has become one of my favorite heroes to read, with his sarcasm, nobility and never surrender attitude. The combat scenes are vivid and believable, both when Merz discribes unarmed and armed combat. The author, a martial artist, is able to relay the true sense of down and dirty fighting. Not the clean sports one sees on T.V. but the type of fight were both combantants know that in the end, one will be dead.
The supporting cast are just as important as Lawson himself and you feel you know them as well, not just props for Lawson to react to. Giles has grown from someone I disliked origanally into a charracter I enjoy.
Each book in this series just keep getting better and better. I await the next installment, as well as the short stories he provides to fill the time between.

Another Ripping Good Tale

I got an early look at The Ripper and was very pleased with the story, another winner in the Lawson Vampire story. It starts off with plenty of action and the suspense and danger continue throughout the book. Centered in Boston, Lawson and friends once again face another formidable villain, and dark secrets of the past are revealed. You'll also learn more intriguing details about vampiric society. Highly recommended!

Novel 6 is nothing short of brilliant!

I was one of the lucky ones to end up being able to view an advanced copy of The Ripper. This is the 6th novel in the Lawson Vampire series. Of course there are also novellas and short stores to accompany these too! After reading all of Jon's work I have to compare him to wine - he only gets better with age. He has always been good but he continues to outdo himself. If I could give this more than 5 stars I would!

The Ripper takes Lawson on a thrilling adventure where he never knows who did what or where they came from. It is a non-stop and action packed (yes I know sounds clich�... but it really is!) I had to remind myself to breath a few times. This story not only captivated me but it left me hungry for more! I would like to say more but I am afraid I might spoil it.

I really liked that The Ripper also gave us some deeper understanding of all of the supporting characters in this series. I was with Lawson all the way sharing in each of his struggles and all of his laughs.

For anyone who knows me or my reviews you must know also that I cried a few times too. I can't help it I have a soft spot for Lawson and I am very much attached to this series. If I were a Vampire (because obviously they are real) I could hope to be half as bad-ass and loving as Lawson is!

Really I cannot say enough good things about this novel. You just have to read it! You can read it as a standalone however, I really suggest starting from book 1 and going through all the novels, novellas and short stories. They range from FREE to 9.99 which the majority of them 2.99-3.99 - a very good deal for such enjoyable reads.

Oh and I also must say you should get to know Jon. He is a wonderful guy. He is very intelligent, creative, and sincere. He loves his fans and it shows! He has a website/blog/twitter/g+/FB and he manages them himself.

Lastly, while I love them all, my top three picks of Jon's are currently: The Ripper, The Kinsei, and PARALLAX (not from the Lawson series.)

Intriguing Story

This story was a Reader's Digest short story and it intrigued me enough to buy the book. At first I thought how could they go into more detail, but they absolutely did and held my interest and the answer to the mystery until the end. Excellent story.

Justice, not Vengeance - this riveting book makes the thoughtful case that substituting vengeance for justice is a problem for democracy as such. Especially in the US, society exercizes vengeance instead of justice. From TV cop shows, malpractice lawsuits, issues of race and the death penalty, author Terry Aladjem argues we are substituting the cheap nickel of vengeance for the dollar of moral justice - and we all pay the price of that meanness. Tracing his argument in civil and legal discourse, and in literature, from the Greeks through South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Aladjem's argument is bold and convincing. Indeed, it evoked in me that fore-heading smiting, "why didn't I see that?!" reaction of things that are patently true.
A must-read for anyone interested in where our legal, civil, and social systems are heading.

Lang Leav is such a beautiful poet and prose writer. -All of her books are captivating to me. They're easy to read, and quite quick if you don't linger in thought on each page (which I usually do). This poetry book is really sweet, sentimental, and helps you stop and consider the many complexities of love and the world and memories. Definitely a great buy!

I finishes this book in two days. I love those techy words used in this book. I can not find anywhere else in which those words are perfectly arranged into love phrases. The feeling described in the book are so real that we easily dive into the stories.

About the Author

Jean Boyd is former Principal Research Fellow of the Sokoto History Bureau and Research Associate of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She is the author of One Woman's Jihad, The Caliph's Sister, and Sultan Siddiq Abubakar III.

Beverly Mack is a Professor of African Studies in the Department of African and African American Studies and the Director of the University of Kansas African Studies Center (KASC), as well as a Courtesy Professor of Religious Studies. Prior to joining KU, Professor Mack taught at Yale University (Hausa language and African literature), Georgetown University (African history), and George Mason University (African literature).
