Street Zen: The Life and Work of Issan Dorsey, by David Schneider

Drag queen, junkie, alcoholic, commune leader--and, finally, Buddhist teacher: these words describe the unlikely persona of Issan Dorsey, one of the most beloved teachers to emerge from American Zen. Street Zen follows Dorsey from his days as a female impersonator to the LSD experiences that set him on the spiritual path. In 1989, after 20 years of Zen practice, he became abbot of San Francisco's Hartford Street Zen Center, where he founded a hospice for AIDS patients. Street Zen draws on interviews David Schneider conducted with Dorsey before his death in 1990 and parallels their nearly 20-year friendship.

From Library Journal
Issan Dorsey once described himself as a "faggot speed-freak cross dresser," a description that only hints at the outrageousness of his life of substance abuse, prostitution, and female impersonation before embracing Zen in late-Sixties San Francisco. Author Schneider, himself a Zen practitioner and friend of Dorsey, presents an evenhanded account of Dorsey's extraordinary life and death. Dorsey is probably best remembered for his work with the gay community in San Francisco and the establishment of the Maitri hospice for people with AIDS, where he died of the disease in 1990. This work is not an introduction to Zen, but for anyone with an interest in the subject the book raises important questions. It gives a clear handling of the paradox that was Dorsey and the great compassion that he embodied. Recommended for public libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
Religious history rings with tales of converted libertines- -Saul, St. Augustine, Thomas Merton among them. Now, thanks to this wonderfully uplifting biography by freelance journalist Schneider, to that list can be added Issan Dorsey--the thieving, doping, female-impersonating gay hooker who became abbot of one of the nation's top Zen monasteries. Born Thomas Dorsey, Jr., in 1933, the future abbot bloomed into his homosexuality as a teenager and moved to San Francisco, where he developed a nightclub drag-queen act--and a world-class drug habit to go with it. Here, we learn much about Dorsey's life from his own mouth--Schneider interviewed Dorsey extensively, as well as his friends, for this account: ``I loved barbiturates...I'd take them by mouth, or melt them down and shoot them. If I had tracks, I'd just put makeup on them,'' says Dorsey, who hit bottom in the early 60's in Chicago while living and robbing with a hooker/stripper/thief named Bang Bang La Toure. When Dorsey moved back to San Francisco, though, he encountered LSD--and spun into a psychedelic, then spiritual, direction, eventually landing on a balcony overlooking meditators at the city's Zen Center. Dorsey decided to join them--and never looked back, devoting himself to two Zen masters, including the controversial Richard Baker (Schneider examines the Baker-Dorsey relationship as a provocative case study in the master-disciple dynamic). In time, Dorsey became abbot of the Castro district's Hartford Street Zen Center, and it's clear from the numerous testimonies here that his earlier life instilled in him an astonishing tolerance and compassion for all--a trait that inspired him to open the city's celebrated Maitri Hospice, for AIDS patients. Never fully embracing celibacy, Dorsey himself contracted AIDS, dying in 1990. Not hagiographic--Schneider emphasizes that Dorsey remained mercurial until the end--but, still, angels weep as the abbot, his body ravaged but his dignity aglow, breathes his final breath. inspiration on the way
By Irma Bauer
I read this book after reading a biography about Janis Joplin. The same time, maybe occasionally even the same places (Big Brother and the Holding company played at a concert raising funds for Shunryu Suzukis Tassajara-project). A similar background in a time, when people, societies, whole nations were on the move, being shaken, transformed, struggling for new outlooks or on the contrary trying to conserve a seemingly dead old world. Two lives in the same turbulent and exciting days, and yet how different. I was deeply touched by both books. But the one which stays with me and serves as one of the inspirations on the way to inner realisation is this biography of Issan Dorsey. To read it has been not only a deep confrontation with memories of my own past, but also a wonderful and inspiring testimony on what transformation on the path can cause in a gifted and persevering individual.

An incredible life, a remarkable man.
By Dave
I read this book because I heard about a renowned Buddhist named IssanDorsey at a dharma talk. I'm gay myself, and hearing that Issan Dorsey was also a gay man made me interested in finding out about his life. So, I popped his name into a search engine, and ordered this book from amazon.
Up until recently, my relationship with religion in general has been a bad one. The tendency of Western religions to preach hate toward my kind has made it all but impossible for me to participate in any of them. Legislators on both sides of the political aisle have used religion as a vehicle for either passing laws to restrict my freedom or turn a blind eye to these efforts, for fear that any support for my community would render one 'unelectable'. None of this has made for a very good advertisement of religion for my community.
Buddhism struck me as being fundamentally different, and when I read this book, I realized just how different it was. Issan Dorsey was from my side of the tracks, and instead of preaching self-loathing to him, Buddhism taught him how he could make a major difference in the lives of those who needed him the most.
I'm pretty inspired to give this Buddhism thing a try now. I've never heard of a religion that doesn't judge people before. Maybe this is the one for me.

A deep sense of gratitude
By Porchlight
I read the reviews of this book before purchasing it. As a queer writer in Spirituality and Religion I have a great deal of sensitivity about heterosexist bent towards gay characters and history. So, David Sunseri's review of the book sat perched on my shoulder as I read this book.

Having finished this book I have to say that I am left seriously questioning Sunseri's criticism of the book. It is a wonderful story and a tender account of a remarkable person. Having read this book and appreciating the care given to speak to the myriad parts of Issan Dorsey's (full) life story, I have to wonder if Sunseri isn't speaking from a place of internalized homophobia. Nowhere did I find the "sensationalizing" of homosexuality that Sunseri and Harper Leah (?) mention.

In fact, I am now left to believe that Sunseri and Leah would prefer a completely sex-free, queer-free reading of Dorsey's life.

If the book had sensational parts, that's because parts of Issan Dorsey's life were sensational and outrageous. That's not heterosexist bias dear ones. Heterosexist bias would be to "clean up" those stories and de-queer Dorsey. Fortunately Schneider doesn't suffer from any such prudery.

A closer reading of Sunseri's reviews show what is clearly a bitter bias towards anything involving the entire Soto Zen community. Sunseri states that quite vividly in his review of Robert Winson's "Dirty Laundry."

Fortunately, I don't suffer from that bias. I approached this book wanting to know more about this intriguing person, Issan Dorsey, who, by all accounts, wasn't afraid to embrace the totality of his life's existence and who has left a legacy of caring for others in need.

Do not miss this book if you're interested in a truly remarkable story of a Gay pioneer and spiritual elder. It is not the complete story. But it is one of the stories and it deserves to be read. Perhaps members of the Hartford Zen Center complaining about the lack of Issan's "teachings" in the book could get off their zazen pillows and publish them. I'm sure they have more access to it than anyone.

Excellent, Practical, Indispensable
By M. Goitein
Not just a great book on program management, but perhaps the best book on overall project management I have ever read.
Mr. Brown does an excellent job breaking down the challenges facing a program manager at any level. He writes not from a theoretical perspective, but directly from being mentored by the best, and having experience in project and program management in NASA.
Pretty much the diametric opposite of the PMBOK, this book is extremely practical, and the suggestions can be immediately implemented regardless of industry.
Expensive for a Kindle book, and well worth it.

From Booklist
This intriguing book in the Road to Reading series provides a sound introduction to one of children's favorite plants, the Venus flytrap, along with the sundew, pitcher plant, and the bladderwort--just a few of the 600 kinds of carnivorous plants that exist. The basic facts about the structure and behavior of these plants are presented, including the way they're designed and whether they're active or passive traps. The sundew, for example, has tentacles containing thousands of tiny sticky balls that glisten like dewdrops. An insect looking for a sip of nectar will get stuck and not be able to pull free. The harder it pulls the more glue the sundew makes. Then this passive trap becomes very active. The sticky tentacles slowly curl around the insect, squeezing it to death and digesting it with acids. In clear, concise language supported by detailed color illustrations, Batten and Mirocha have created an informative and fascinating first chapter book. Shelley Townsend-Hudson

comprehensive text on change
By A Customer
So much of the literature on change is often a simplistic cookbook claiming change can be executed in 7 easy steps. Burke provides the reader with the theoretical background and takes one through the multiple considerations when executing organizational change. I applaud Dr Burke for revealing the complexity of change and providing insights into the practice of change management. This is a primer for all who are engaged especially in large scale transformational change as it clearly provides one the background to help one educate others on why the change agent does what she does.

A solid foundation book for the field of Organizational Change
By B. Conway
In Burke's Organization Change Theory and Practice the author provides us with a solid base of understanding of the nature of organizational change and the leadership needed to shepherd change through to a successful completion. In the book Burk provides and overview of organizational change, defining the differences between evolutionary and revolutionary change, and how it applies by looking at real world examples. He also discusses the nature of change and goes into both theoretical and practical approaches in a variety of situations.

This edition has been updated to cover transformational leadership. I the additional chapters the author identifies roles and responsibilities that are important to instill in developing the leaders. Burke covers what he feels are eight areas important to shepherding the change process through the prelaunch, launch and post launch phases of any size change initiative.

All throughout the book the author cites the large body of previous work that this book is built on, making it a fantastic reference for those who may wish to delve further into the theory and practice of organizational change.

Should be a part of every academic library reference collection
By Midwest Book Review
Now in a completely updated and significantly expanded second edition, "Organization Change: Theory And Practice" by W. Warner Burke (Edward Lee Thorndike Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also serves as the Chair of the Department of Organization and Leadership) continues to be esteemed and recommended as a graduate school level text for university course work in the disciplines of industrial psychology, business administration, and organizational behavior. An invaluable resource for understanding and analyzing organizations be they corporate, governmental, or academic, this edition of "Organizational Change" is enhanced with a new chapter on 'Transformational Leadership' covering the fundamentals of leadership compared with management, transformational leadership, and the roles/responsibilities of the change leader. Also of note is the illuminating discussion on theories for understanding organization and change; as well as the evolutionary and revolutionary aspects of organization change. Professor Burke analytically discusses the nature of change and how organizational change is initiated by changing behavior, but not (as is commonly supposed) changes in mental sets or attributes. Enhanced with the inclusion of theoretical and illustrative models, as well as a model of meticulous and articulate scholarship, "Organizational Change" should be a part of every academic library reference collection and is especially recommended reading for students of the role of leadership in organizational evolution.

How to Be Holy: First Steps in Becoming a Saint, by Peter Kreeft

"Life, in the end, has only one tragedy: not to have been a saint."
– Lon Bloy

The ever-popular and prolific Peter Kreeft says that the most important question he has written about is how one becomes holy; or to put it another way, how one becomes a saint. This question is central to all the great religions, Kreeft demonstrates, for striving toward holiness, moving toward perfect love, is the whole purpose of life.

Kreeft admits that he is only a beginner on the climb to holiness, and it is to novices like him that he has written this engaging and encouraging book. Using the insights and experiences of saints and great spiritual writers throughout history, Kreeft shows what holiness is and how it can be achieved. He especially draws upon the spiritual classic Abandonment to Divine Providence by Jean-Pierre de Caussade, S.J. The core of Caussade's timeless gem is that God reveals himself to all of us through the daily events of our lives. The surest way toward spiritual growth, therefore, is by perceiving and accepting the merciful will of God in every situation.

Kreeft stresses the simplicity of his approach to holiness, which focuses mainly on the virtue of love. Sanctity is love, he asserts, and only that can give us what we all long for—deep and lasting joy.

In God We Trust
By Charles Schmidt
A great book on the purpose of life. What more could you ask for? And it only takes about 3 hours to read.

Like almost all of philosopher Peter Kreeft's books, this book is full of wisdom, which is more precious than rubies. There are lots of insights in this book. One of the first is that the whole purpose of life is to be a saint. That in itself makes the book worth reading.

But there are other nuggets in this treasure chest of a book. For example, Kreeft points out that our feelings are not only motivator and rewards (and punishments), but feelings are a way of seeing the truth (in addition to reason, intuition, and experience).

Also noted is that faith is trust in God. And to top it off, being a saint brings not only happiness, but joy, which is happiness on steroids. This may be the first book to state that there is a level of pleasure or peace beyond happiness, called joy, and it is much stronger than happiness. And saints are joyful.

Another chapter explains how it is that people sin, when the wages of sin is death. As Kreeft writes, "For another thing, our passions are disordered and are stronger than our reason. For still another thing, our will is weak, so even when we see the truth, we often do not will it. So there are three reasons Plato is wrong: because our reason, our passions, and our will are all fallen."

The book points out that for God to be God, He must be Good, Omnipotent and Omniscient, and any God without those traits isn't really God.

This book is also a strong refutation of the problem of how a Good, Omnipotent, Allmighty God can allow evil to occur. The answer is given in the Bible in Romans 8:28, which says that "For those who love God all things work together for the good." In other words, no matter what life throws at you, you can be confident that in the end, all will be well. In the end, God will set things right. The logic of the book's argument that this must be true is quite compelling.

To top it off, this book gives 4 definitions of 'heart' that are heartful and worth studying. Add to that the real reason people aren't saints is that they really don't want to be a saint. They're afraid it's too demanding, too ascetic, ignoring that it's the entire reason we are here.

To summarize, it's reasonable and wise to place one's faith in divine providence, and "In God We Trust" isn't just on our currency, but it's the foundation of wisdom.

I first purchased the Kindle edition simply because I like Kreeft's writing and was curious about the title
By B. Conyers
I first purchased the Kindle edition simply because I like Kreeft's writing and was curious about the title. Today I have ordered 3 paperbacks to give as gifts!
I wanted to write a solid review for this book, and I have been sitting at my desk writing for 30 minutes. But I cannot find the words to use for this book that weaves together solid theology, philosophy, and common sense to bring renewed hope and love into our lives.
It is a book you can give to ANYONE--believer or not! It is written simply, but in a way you will have to re-read the page as you ask yourself: "Is this for real?"
He has his own sense of humor that he interjects at just the right time to make a point that zings to your heart.
You will laugh...there are moments you will stop for a while to reflect...you will cry...you will pray.
It is one of those volumes that will be by my chair along with my Bible and Catechism to be read over and over.
I recommend it to anyone with one word of caution: you won't be able to stop with one book, you will quickly want to share it with friends, family, and neighbors.
Kreeft has made the Good News clear, desirable, and share-able! Your heart will find love, hope and renewal!
Turn off the tv and give Kreeft ten minutes a day for two weeks---it will change your life!!!

Peter never ceases to amaze me. He can take the most difficult subject and make it understandable. But, on the other hand, he can write a short sentence that requires several readings to even begin to understand.

Good book, great library
By Jack Sparrow
Buy this book only if you:
1. Know the basics of natural language processing (NLP) or linguistics;
2. Know the Python programming language or you're willing to learn it;
3. Are using the NLTK library or plan to do so.

NLTK is a Python library that offers many standard NLP tools (tokenizers, POS taggers, parsers, chunkers and others). It comes with samples of several dozens of text corpora typically used in NLP applications, as well as with interfaces to dictionary-like resources such as WordNet and VerbNet. No FrameNet, though. NLTK is well documented, so you might not need this book initially. However, it definitely helps to have it on your desk if you are serious about using NLTK.

The first chapters are a bit messy, as they attempt to introduce all three themes (NLP, NLTK and Python) together. Beginners may have some difficulty sorting things out. By the time you reach the WordNet section, you either got lost in the forest, realize that you would never understand this topic without the book, or both. However, if you are a bit patient and try out all simple code examples, you'll make it eventually. In my opinion, NLTK remains the simplest, most elegant and well rounded library of its kind.

Questionable Material
By John M. Ford
Edward Loper's book is an introduction to the Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) for the Python programming language. Its target audience is a narrow one. It assumes a working familiarity with Python. It's true that an experienced programmer could learn Python along the way, but getting the most from the code examples and walkthrough explanations requires enough familiarity to "think" in Python. The book also assumes sufficient familiarity with Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand why one would want to build lexicons, grammars, and parsers.

The book has several strengths. It is tightly integrated with Python and NLTK code. There are numerous examples throughout and the author walks through and modifies them to clarify how the NLTK works. The sizeable reference sections at the end of each chapter are also valuable. These sections include both introductory and advanced sources. And a lot of them. There is also useful integration with the NLTK web site which provides and points to additional resources.

Not to be missed are the end-of-chapter questions. Readers have come to expect little from these learning aids; they usually invite us to parrot back a small number of key concepts or try a few calculations or code segments. This book's questions go far beyond the norm. They introduce new concepts, encourage writing and comparing several versions of a program, and otherwise extend each chapter's contents. Even readers who don't plan to complete these exercises should read them closely.

Weaknesses are few. As noted, the book may assume too much Python and NLP background for some users. It does have a narrow focus and is not organized the right way to be used as a reference book. Readers who want something a little more modular and reference-like might prefer Jacob Perkins' Python 3 Text Processing with NLTK 3 Cookbook. David Mertz's Text Processing in Python is an older source, but still useful as well.

Great guide to NLTK
By Sujit Pal
NLTK was originally designed for teaching NLP, but because NLTK is so comprehensive, it is also quite vast, and you will need a guide to get you started on using it effectively. This book is that guide. Its organized into 4 sections. Chapters 1-4 cover the basics; 5-7 covers language processing, tagging, classification and information extraction; Chapters 8-10 covers sentence parsing, syntax, structure and representations of meaning, and Chapter 11 covers managing linguistics data. If you are looking to get an overview of NLP, as well as reasonable proficiency in manipulating text and extracting information from it, this book may be for you. People who are not NLP specialists but need to use NLP techniques at work will find this book particularly helpful. People who plan on specializing in NLP will probably find the book useful as a stepping stone into the field.

My interest in NLP (and the book) is limited to being able to apply machine learning techniques to solve NLP problems, so I found the first two sections really useful. However, the entire book (including the exercises) is a great source of ideas on what you can accomplish in NLP with NLTK.
