Finding Purpose in Life by Listening to your Heart

The Power of the Heart is the companion book to the film by the same name. Each chapter of the book focuses on a different power of the heart, such as gratitude, forgiveness, resilience, and love. Baptist de Pape then provides quotes from the 18 spiritual leaders he interviewed, along with his thoughts on each power. Quotes from other famous people are also peppered throughout. At the end of each chapter, he provides a “Contemplation” exercise relevant to the topic of the chapter. The format of the book reminded me of The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.

I liked seeing the differing perspectives of the spiritual leaders to the topics Baptist raised. I found myself particularly drawn to the quotes from Deepak Chopra and Paulo Coelho. Here’s an example from each:

Deepak: “Love without action is meaningless, and action without love is irrelevant.”

Paulo: “There is nothing wrong with fear. The only thing that is wrong is to be paralyzed by fear.”

Baptist also made some great observations, like saying: “Resentment is like a cup of poison you pour down your throat in the hope it will kill the other person. And while the other remains unharmed, you wind up destroying yourself.”

There were also some great quotes from historical figures to illustrate certain points, such as Gandhi’s comment: “As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world…as in being able to remake ourselves.”

This is not the kind of book where you get an in-depth look at the philosophy of each spiritual leader, but it does provide inspiring reminders from all of them to lead with our hearts if we really want to live a purposeful life. The quotes alone make it an excellent read.

Beginning with the attention to detail on the cover, the dust jacket, the paper and the layout, this is a book you will keep forever. The book is a companion to the movie, featuring the vision of the author/creator Baptist De Pape and what he calls his “co-creators,” eighteen icons of the spiritual and scientific world. He interviewed them over a period of time, including Deepak Chopra, Paulo Coelho, Eckart Tolle, Jane Goodall and many more. The results are breathtaking. As a Licensed HeartMath� Trainer, I am fully aware of the heart as the center of our power and wisdom as represented here by Howard Martin and Rollin McCraty. As a lifetime reader, I am aware of the heart-path of Isabel Allende and Maya Angelou. Many thanks and much appreciation to Atria Books for the ARC of this wonderful book for the purpose of this review. This book is co- authored, compiled, and edited by Baptist De Pape, a lawyer, author, filmmaker, and spiritual advisor.

This treasured volume was written to educate, motivate, inspire, and enlighten readers of the most powerful dimension of consciousness, energy, wisdom, of life itself: the human heart. This short volume is divided into three parts. Part I: Paths To The Heart, Part II: The Inner Powers, Part III: Heart In The World. The eighteen contributing authors - medical professional scholars, scientists, doctors, and educators are among the best highly acclaimed world wide thinkers and spiritual advisors in modern society. The observations and comments of each individual were short, direct, and easy to follow. Contemplative exercises for meditation and enlightenment were also included.

The observations realized from "Power of the Heart: Finding Your True Purpose in Life" were that the heart is all knowing, so powerful it is associated with the "voice of God" or the universe, which essence is love. We connect with our heart through silence. People who are disconnected from their hearts were described as "the walking dead" merely existing. I liked this book all the way until about 20 percent.. Then everything got a bit awry and confusing. The characters personalities shrivel and finally die!SPOILER ALERT! Chevie becomes all mopey and miserable and becomes obsessive about Riley! Its Riley and couldve had something we could of looovveeddd each other.. BUT no were doomed and it will NEVER happen! What happened to her fiery confidence! Shed been in way worse situations than this! The plot becomes all muddled and confusing and completely far fetched! Compared to this superman is realistic! And when ''Caspar the friendly ghost''(ridiculous) explains the inter dimension thing I had no idea what was going on and I dont think colfer did either... The ending was beyond weird.. Chevie becomes this weird mystical granny... It also seems that chevie and Rileys medlings in the past havent affected the present day at ALL! The reason why I gave this 3 stars was because its fast paced there are some great new characters and yeah thats it! I recommend this to people who wanna finish the series... Also to everyone because the first 2 were so good! I hope that colfer comes with something brilliant and witty like artemis fowl in the future he is actually a brilliant author!

Third, and possibly last, in the W.A.R.P. science fiction thriller series for middle-grade readers that is revolving around the very-young Special Agent Chevie Savano and her unexpected Victorian partner, Riley.

My Take
Jailed prisoners of today have no idea how good they have it!

The Forever Man threw me backwards and forwards in so many ways. It was horrifying and hilarious, and ended with simply sad. So much loss in so many ways. The witchfinding mentality of Mandrake was appalling. Talk about a bunch of sheep. On the other hand, the Mandrake FBI field office was pretty amazing. It's a shame Chevie had to happen to it. Arghh. I do hate that heroic-act-without-thinking trope.

It is also confusing with all that back and forth of the past intermixed with the future and the various presents. Yeah, more than one present, and I don't mean gifts. Contributing to the confusion is the dead professor whose ghost is alive and intellectually active with life still to come.

Using the holding trap as an opportunity for Riley to recap his past with Garrick was fascinating in a macabre way while the end was interesting and nebulous. That wormhole has worked some unexpected changes in Chevie, and it could actually be the end, or it could be the start of a new stage in Chevie's life with potential for a partnership? Maybe??

The Story
A desperate hope to find and save his half-brother ends with Riley, Chevie, and Garrick falling through time to the witch-obsessed village of Mandrake. It doesn't help Chevie's case in 1647 that the wormhole is changing Chevie into a cat.

Luckily, the professor's messing about is bringing time travelers to Mandrake. Unluckily, the professor's messing about is close to bringing about the end of the world.

"Only kill the innocent."

The Characters
Chevron "Chevie" Savano, a Shawnee Native American, is a juvenile consultant with the FBI who traveled to the past to fix the future. And her body is changing. Riley is a fourteen-year-old Victorian orphan who trapped his really evil master, Garrick, in the time tunnel.

In 1647, Mandrake's Groan, Huntingdonshire, England, is…
…a Puritan community of 48 brick houses where Albert Garrick, a psychotic Victorian assassin who has also been known as the Red Glove, a murderous magician, is known as the Witchfinder. Only one of the many lives he's lived since Riley threw him into a wormhole in 1899.

The humorless, power-mad Godfrey Cryer is the town crier, constable, and the last disciple of the Witchfinder. Thomas Cutler and Ben are two of the guards. Jeronimo Woulfe is a mason and brick worker. Lizzie is Jeronimo's pretty daughter, and Anna is his wife. Master Baldwin Sherry is the silversmith. Bartleby Primly is the richest merchant in town and has twin sons: Randall and Henry. Women who were victimized included Millicent Lewis, a gentle midwife, and Christabella Clopton. Matthew Hopkins is the Witchfinder General.

The stranded FBI team
Fairbrother Isles, a.k.a., Fender Rhodes Isles, seems to be an African dullard with hopes for his coded name. His partner, Donald Pointer, hardly qualifies as human company anymore. Professor Charles Smart is a quantum physicist who, at the end of the twentieth century, discovered how to access wormholes, Einstein Bridges. The Hobbit Hole is an emergency hideout.

Tom "Ginger" Riley is Riley's lost half-brother. Sir James Maccabee is London's most feared attorney, and he's afraid of his Lurker. Tartan Nancy Grimes is a prison negotiator, a wheedler. Broadband is a guard at Newgate Prison. Otto Malarkey. Bob Winkle is Riley's assistant. Redmond is his name.

Quantico
W.A.R.P. is the FBI's Witness Anonymous Relocation Program that stashes federal witnesses in the past. One problem with those wormholes? Not everyone comes out the way they went in, although silver helps. Cord Vallicose had been an instructor at Quantico. Rosa Fuentes got a bad end of the deal with the wormhole; she had been partnered with Agent William Riley to look after a Mob banker. Olaf the Boar is another victim of the wormhole.

The Devil's Brew is a method of execution that involves pouring molten silver down the prisoner's throat.

Twists & turns of past and future

Oh the twists and turn this book took! Some where way out there and some made sense. Why did Chevie save her dad but not her mother? How did she eliminate the cat eyes, when she couldn't before? Why did she not die if she lived past 100 but became young again into the past? Ok, you get the point...its a good series but it takes a while to like the characters...lot more darkness than Artemis Fowl but I wouldn't mind a few more books in this series!

Married To The Game was a great readers choice for anyone who loves a real true story told in factual events. It gives you something to look back on to evaluate the essence how one person's struggle to keep their voice alive benefited so many others who have come and gone before us. Lydia Harris' account of what really occured in Compton was the evolution of a real story untold in the early 90's area of music. Most women luck up on prince charming and in this case Lydia Met Michael "Harry O" Harris, who was a classic man, who ran and owned several business' at very young age in his career. Lydia had no idea that one day in her near future, her life would be full of court room hearings, lawyers luncheons, and consistent sharks who wanted to take advantage of Michael Harris' empire. Soon Lydia and Michael would build their own joining ventures together and become one force under Godfather Entertainment.

It is a fact that a convicted felon cannot sit as an active CEO, therfore Lydia's role took full force in developing and planning the emerge of the label that would come to be called, Death Row Records. In some accounts upcoming artist at the time claim that Death Row came about from the guys chillin with "Suge" on what is considered "Tha Row" talking about what the name of the label should be. They came up with "Deaf Row" like "Def Jam" records which at the time was a popluar label in high demand with household name artist. In Lydia's, account she describes the title of the label as a common agreement between Lydia, Michael, Suge, and David. The reason it was called Death Row was because everyone on the label at the time had a criminal background and where fighting court cases. Michael and Lydia wanted to create a platform where young artist could be exposed to main stream media in the music industry and also be able to fight against the indifferences and injustices imposed on black communities during those times.

What actually ended up happening with Death Row Records, was not the initial intention for Lydia, Mike, and Suge. As we know somewhere along the way, David Kenner lost interest in helping build and protect the Empire and instead turned his back on the once and a lifetime opportunity for Urban Music and its Future. Ironically, in the four years of Death Rows Chart Ripping records, Death Row reigned in the music indudtry while also introducing to new concepts to the Game of music and entertainment. One concept was the introduction of Label Logo jewlery specifally gold chained necklace and double cds in what was reffered to the hip hop music. Both ideas were first introduced by the infamous Death Row Records.

So in my opinion Lydia Harris, not only fought for herself, she fought her daughter, Michael, Suge, Snoop, Dre. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Lady of Rage just to name a few... This is a leagacy worth honoring and paying homage too. In 2015, or in the near future. If Lydia were to do it all over again, return to the game that she "married" over 2 decades ago, who would be the next Artist to make a name for themselves with her knowledge and expertise in finding the next multi-platinum recording artist sale chart HIT. There is no telling where the music industry could turn for the future but we do know that it is a very high possibility that the music will touch many lives again! hip hop, gospel, jazz, country, alternative,pop, reggae, R&B. With the creation of new sound all across the world. We need a woman like Lydia Harris to show the world Who really knows how to execute with talented artist in the music industry having power and integrity and most of all your word. my food for thought! Now READ THE BOOK!! It's worth knowing what happened to urban hip hop music and so many powerful influences we acknowledge with high noteriety today in music. With Lydia Harris dedication and commitment Death Row Records Did IT Overnight!!!

About the Author

Miles Van Pelt (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Alan Belcher Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, where he also serves as Academic Dean. Miles lives in Madison, Mississippi, with his wife, Laurie, and their four children.

Gary D. Pratico (ThD, Harvard Divinity School) is senior professor of Old Testament and Hebrew language at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He has been teaching Hebrew for more than thirty years and is coauthor with Miles V. Van Pelt of Basics of Basics of Biblical Hebrew (grammar and workbook) and The Vocabulary Guide to Biblical Hebrew.

A very handy guide

A great companion to the Basic's of Biblical Hebrew series. I used it to write class notes on. There is a DVD with it that also has the Charts. I still refer to it when I run into problem texts.

Very disappointing

I was pretty excited about getting this book, and expected it to be a pretty thorough resource. After all a book dedicated to BH charts should really be a pretty complete reference. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Frankly, I'm not sure what the authors really intended this book to be, but it lacks both focus and depth. The book is trying to cover paradigms for verbs, nouns, etc., but also explain basic grammatical principles. And in either case it's not doing a very thorough job. It looks like the authors ripped most of their charts and grammar principles from their Basics of Biblical Hebrew (BBH) book, I went to the library and did a brief comparison, and added very little beyond what's in that book. In fact their BBH textbook has additional summary tables of verbal paradigms that AREN'T in this book. For example in BBH, starting on p. 416 they have a nice summary of verbal paradigms, the kind that most folks are used to seeing in Weingreen, Ross, Seow, etc. (with a full inflection for all stems on a single page), which aren't included in this one. Not only would I have expected them to be included, but I also expected that the book would go well beyond it and have much more. For example, I would expect the book to include paradigms for some key doubly-weak verbs such as hyh, ytz), yr), r)h, etc.

There are quite a few "charts" in the book (over 100) and more on the CD (400+). Some of them are certainly useful and the content is certainly correct. The authors do have some interesting charts on verbs that you don't see in a typical grammar, but the fact that they have left out the standard charts just doesn't make sense. The book also covers basic syntactical rules which is nice, but it's pretty rudimentary and it certainly does not make up for other shortcomings. A number of the charts are so basic that they shouldn't even be called charts -- like a chart on syllabification, which covers only two rules and explains how do divide the word "davar" into syllables. And it takes the entire 8x10" page! The use of extremely large fonts (Hebrew letters of 1/2 inch size in some cases) is rather puzzling to me. There is a LOT of white and in my opinion wasted space on each page and for the most part, very little content. They could have used the space to print all the 400+ charts in the book, instead of including the CD. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind this decision was, but it wasn't a good move. Basically, if I really want to browse all that the authors have put together, I have to either print the charts that aren't in the book from the CD or browse through the CD on my computer. Not very useful. If anything I would expect the CD to have charts for Biblical Aramaic or something extra that is beyond the scope of the book. Fat chance.

Because the book is printed on a large page format, I expected the pages to be packed with content. Instead it is missing much of what a reference book like this should undoubtedly contain. The print/font sizes are formatted for some seriously far-sided folks. Once again I am disappointed with the book and I would not recommend it to anyone serious enough or advanced enough who would be looking for and expecting it to be a complete and a comprehensive reference covering every imaginable verbal chart and beyond. Two stars are a stretch.

The charts are clear and in very large print, so in that way this is quite a nice book. However, this item seems to be more useful for the teaching of the material than for self-study outside of class.

About the Author
Martin Haenggi received the Dipl. Ing. (M.Sc.) and the Dr. sc. techn. (Ph.D.) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) in 1995 and 1999, respectively. He joined the University of Notre Dame in January 2001, where he currently is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and a Concurrent Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and five of its societies and a Senior Member of the ACM and two of its special interest groups. He served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Ad Hoc Networks from 2005-8, as a Guest Editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications in 2008-9 and the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology in 2012-13, and as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (TMC) from 2008-11 and the ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks from 2009-11. Currently he serves on the Steering Committee for TMC. He was a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 2005-6 and was the Keynote Speaker at the 2013 Workshop on Spatial Stochastic Models for Wireless Networks. He was a General Co-Chair of the 2009 International Workshop on Spatial Stochastic Models for Wireless Networks and the 2012 DIMACS Workshop on Connectivity and Resilience for Large-Scale Networks, and a TPC Co-Chair of the Communication Theory Symposium of the 2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications. He is a co-author of the monograph Interference in Large Wireless Networks (2009). His scientific interests are in wireless communications and networking. For both his M.Sc. and his Ph.D. theses, he was awarded the ETH medal, and he received an NSF CAREER award in 2005 and the 2010 IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award.

Excellent account of historical processes

On the contrary to the person who blamed the biased narrative of the book, I consider it to be helpfull in so far as this is a coherent narrative regarding the geo-political re-articulation of the classical American Exceptionalism in the post-Cold-War period. It is true that sometimes the book is schematic and resembles Galeano's famous anti-imperialist book, Las venas abiertas de Am�rica Latina, but it is due to the very historical nature of the American foreign policy in the region. Moreover, the book is important for its attempt to deal with the very condition of political power and hegemony (rather than the too abstract notion of Empire or imperialism) in the context opened up by the September 11 attacks and followed, as well as confirmed, by Abu Ghraib and Guant�namo.

The author is highly biased against the USA and, at times, comes off as very smug. This is really a piece of polemic, not any kind of serious historical or journalistic writing. It cannot be recommended to anyone doing actual research on the matter of US/Latin American policy research.

If you like wing chun kung fu then you'll no doubt like and enjoy the Vietnamese version of this system.

IF you take just a small segment or a few exercises from this book and practice it daily with your partner! I do believe you can make a lot of progress learning this version of wing chun!!!!

Jane D. Monson received her MLS from the University of Iowa and is digital initiatives librarian at the University of Northern Colorado. She was previously digital projects librarian at Truman State University in Missouri. She has been published in Computers in Libraries magazine, is a book reviewer for the Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship, and serves on the Library and Information Technology Association s Publications Committee.

Roy Tennant's piece on "Furthering Your Career" provides great how-to guidance on this topic

From ALA's Library and Information Technology Assn (LITA), this guide comprises contributed chapters on the basics of digital librarianship. Starting with "what the heck is digital librarianship?" (my paraphrase), the guide then does deeper dives into several aspect of DL work plus providing tips on how to position yourself for DL career opportunities. Helpful for both MLIS students (see esp. Vandergrift and Pho's "Getting the Most Out of Library School" chapter) and practitioners trying to understand both where the career opportunities are and how to bridge existing LIS skills into those opportunities (see esp. Underhill and Wade's "Making a Career Shift" chapter). Roy Tennant's piece on "Furthering Your Career" provides great how-to guidance on this topic, applying equally well to students, recent grads, and mid-career professionals. A useful and practical resource for understanding how digital librarianship fits (or could fit) into your LIS career future.

Basic although a well-written book with a lot of useful tips. Some chapters have an overview of general IT concepts. Anyway it works as a introduction to the subject.
