simply about global health issue

have you ever wondered about the reason why over a million people die every day in the world? well one of the reasons are associated with the health of these people. many people who live in the developing world get bitten by mosquitoes and suffer malaria. malaria parasite can kill an individual if not treated accordingly. you may have consumed about 20 oz of water today or even lavished over 80 gallons of water within the past week in anything you use water for. however, do you know that there are people in the developing countries who die of thirst as a result of lack of clean water? well, learn what the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals has to say about this issue of health globally and there target to combat preventable deaths in the areas that needs it most by reading this book. i am sure it will be a great insight for you, if you live in a developed country but don't know much about what goes on in developing nations.

The importance of public health on a global scale

This book was a recommended reading for a university level course entitled “Introduction to Public Health.” We used the book extensively over the course of the semester to examine health issues prevalent in developing countries, read and discuss the provided case studies, and study the most recent, available (at the time), data for the purpose of developing ways to address ongoing and/or rising global health issues. I can confirm that a good portion of the book focuses on the health needs of developing countries, specifically the lack of access to essential health services/products (e.g. water purification tablets), especially among the poor and disadvantaged. You will also be drawn into the issues surrounding topics such as nutrition and health, infectious diseases, and the effects of natural disasters on health and health outcomes.

Please give this a read before you buy!

These tab books are NEVER 100%. I've played for about 22 years and have never found one that is dead-on. That said I'm a life-long Van Halen fan, I'm accustomed to Eddie's style of playing, and I without doubt know when a tab book is wrong.

This book will give you a great starting point--no doubt. Maybe they were in a rush to throw this together but I was very disappointed. I find it easier to read the tab to learn a song than to figure it out by ear. I've only learned a few songs from the album and moderately 'learned' others but plan to learn them 100%.

Here's what I can speak for:
Tattoo: Verse sections are inaccurate but very close--it at least sounds correct. -least favorite song on the album but I've watched him play it live--tab is wrong.
She's the Woman: Seems 100% accurate.
You and Your Blues: Intro is VERY wrong--not at all where Eddie plays it.
China Town: Main riff after tapping intro is wrong. The notes are right, but it's not what/how it's played.
BLOOD AND FIRE: MY FAVORITE OF THE ALBUM. Verse sections are wrong but very close. The tapping section towards the end of the solo are WAAAAYYYYY OFF. Very poor effort at transcribing.
Outta Space: Almost correct with the exception of the tapping section at the beginning of the solo. Very wrong.
Big River and Beats Workin': both 'seem' fine. I have not learned them the whole way through yet but I think they are correct.

Like I said, this book will give you a good starting point. I've never even been a person that is hell-bent on playing a solo note-for-note, but the solos noted above are very wrong. I own several of these tab books including the entire Van Halen catalog, several Zakk Wylde books, Metallica, and others. I'VE HONESTLY NEVER SEEN ONE THIS INACCURATE.

Check out software called Transcribe! which is software that will slow down a solo to a crawl for you to figure it out. You can just import any mp3 file into the software and select how much you want to slow it down. I was able to figure out Blood and Fire and Outta Space solos using this. They offer a 31 day free trial too but I have not bought it (yet).

Spiegelman's Maus, A Survivor's Tale (Pantheon, 1987) was a breakthrough, a comic book that gained widespread mainstream attention. The primary story of that book and of this sequel is the experience of Spiegelman's father, Vladek, a Polish Jew who survived the concentration camps of Nazi Germany during World War II. This story is framed by Spiegelman's getting the story from Vladek, which is in turn framed by Spiegelman's working on the book after his father's death and suffering the attendant anxiety and guilt, the ambivalence over the success of the first volume, and the difficulties of his "funny-animal" metaphor. (In both books, he draws the char acters as anthropomorphic animals-- Jews are mice, Poles pigs, Germans cats, Americans dogs, and French frogs.) The interconnections and complex characterizations are engrossing, as are the vivid personal accounts of living in the camps. Maus and Maus . . . Together with the much-acclaimed first volume of Spiegelman's Maus (1987--not reviewed), this unusual Holocaust tale will forever alter the way serious readers think of graphic narratives (i.e., comic books). For his unforgettable combination of words and pictures, Spiegelman draws from high and low culture, and blends autobiography with the story of his father's survival of the concentration camps. In funny-book fashion, the all-too-real characters here have the heads of animals--the Jews are mice, the Nazis are rats, and the Poles are pigs--a stark Orwellian metaphor for dehumanized relations during WW II. Much of Spiegelman's narrative concerns his own struggle to coax his difficult father into remembering a past he'd rather forget. What emerges in father Vladek's tale is a study in survival; he makes it through by luck, randomness, and cleverness. Physically strong, he bluffs his way through the camps as a tinsmith and a shoemaker, and also exploits his ability with languages. Every day in Auschwitz, and later in Dachau, demands new bribes and masterly bartering. All of this helps explain Vladek's art of survival in the present: his cheap, miserly behavior; his disappointment over Spiegelman's marriage to a non-Jew; his constant criticism of his own second wife and his son; and even his inexcusable racism. Haunted by the brother who died in the camps, Spiegelman (born in postwar Sweden) also mourns his mother, who survived only to commit suicide in the late 60's. Within the time span of the writing of Maus (1978-91), Vladek died, and Spiegelman now must sort out his complex feelings as he reflects on the success of the first volume--a success built on the tragedy of the Holocaust. With all his doubts, Spiegelman pushes on, realizing that his book deserves a place in the ongoing struggle between memory and forgetting. Raw, Painful and Personal.

This is a powerful work. The tale of a young man's painful relationship with his father is elegantly interwoven with the father's recollection of life as a Jew in Nazi-occupied Poland. Spiegelman's skill and honesty make this a raw, gut-wrenching read, though the tale is somehow ultimately uplifting.
I first read this book as a teenager, and would highly recommend it to people of any age. Over the years, I have re-read it frequently and shared it with friends of all ages. All have taken much from Spiegelman's tale.
A few notes must be made in response to the 10/26/97 comment posted below by a reviewer from Ontario, Canada. It is quite clear that this reviewer did not, in fact, read the book. (S)he mistakenly attacks Spiegelman for portraying the Poles as rats, and wonders if he would be offended if a book were written portraying Jews as rats. Anyone who took the time to read Maus (or merely to examine it's cover!) would know that it is, in fact, the Jewish people who are portrayed as mice/rats, whereas the Poles are portrayed not as vermin, but rather as pigs.
In fact, far from a "vicious" attack against Poles, there are many acts of kindness by Polish people portrayed in the book. Certainly there is unkindness as well, but how can the reviewer forget that this is a factual account of Vladek Spiegelman's life, told from his perspective. If unkind acts by Polish people are a part of that life, then they should be in the book.
Finally, the reviewer in question inelegantly raises a point of some merit, though it is one that is only tangentially related to Spiegelman's work. The Polish people did, in fact, suffer horribly at the hands of both Nazis and Soviets alike. Their death toll in the concentration camps numbered in the millions, and should never be forgotten or omitted when discussing the Holocaust. This book, however, is about Vladek Spiegelman, and so surely it cannot be assailed for its focus on events from his perspective.
Spiegelman's fidelity to his father's! story is to be admired, not attacked. And certainly not by a reviewer who could not be bothered to read the book.

Explanation of the Animal Portrayals

As a history and literature major, I wrote my senior thesis on Maus and Maus II because, after reading them for a class, I couldn't stop thinking about them. The imagery, both drawn and implied, was masterful. Each panel tells the story of the Holocaust as SOMEONE REMEMBERS IT. Spiegelman took his father's story and graphically interpreted it in an incredibly moving way. He did not write a work of historical fact (for whatever those books are worth anyway - even history is a work of memory and interpretation). I love these graphic novels for what they are - brilliant literature and testimony.
I was looking over some of these reviews of Maus because I am going to see Spiegelman speak this weekend and just wanted to know what others had said in the past. I was disheartened to read some of the negative responses to the use of animal caricatures, especially since I have always felt this was the most ingenius part of the works. Looking at these reviews, though, I remembered an interview with Spiegelman I read a while back. He explains the animal caricatures a bit, and I thought it might be beneficial to place a quote here, in this forum.
Published in The Comics Journal, October 1991:
Spiegelman says of the animal portrayals,
"These images are not my images. I borrowed them from the Germans. At a certain point I wanted to go to Poland, and I had to get a visa. I put in my application, and then I got a call from the consul. He said 'the Polish attache wants to speak with you.' And I knew what he wanted to talk to me about. On the way over there, I tried to figure out what I was going to say to him. 'I wanted to draw noble stallions, but I don't do horses very well?' When I got there, he gave me the perfect opening. He said, 'You know, the Nazis called us schwein' (German for pig). And I said, 'Yes, and they called us vermin (German for mouse or rat).'
Ultimately, what the book is about is the commonality of human beings. It's crazy to divide things down the nationalistic or racial or religious lines. And that's the whole point, isn't it? These metaphors, which are meant to self-destruct in my book - and I think they do self-destruct - still have a residual force that allows them to work as metaphors, and still get people worked up over them."
I guess he's right. People do get worked up over the metaphors. Too bad some of those people can't understand them. If you haven't read Maus, you are missing a true piece of art.

Ignore the ramblings of the PC watchdog reviewers.

First of all, if you've read or are reading the other reviews, ignore the blather about how the whole "Animal Farm" metaphor--Jews as mice, Germans as cats, etc..--being racist and demeaning.
Art Spiegelman attempts to tell the story of his father Vladek's life in Hitler's Europe. By and large, the book is a detailed, objective retelling of his Vladek's story. However, as Art himself will realize, "I can't even make sense out of my relationship with my father--how am I supposed to make sense out of the Holocaust?" and "Reality is much too complex for comics--so much has to be left out or distorted." Thus liberated from the impossible standard of complete objectivity, Art is free to insert two important subjective elements into the story--the depiction of different races as different species, and the insertion of himself as a character in MAUS.
Obviously, Art is not a overt racist--in fact, in the second part of MAUS, Art will scold his father for distrusting a black person, and a German-Jewish couple will help Vladek return home after being freed from the death camps. The point of portraying Jews as mice, Germans as cats, Poles as pigs, etc. is to show what race relations during Hitler's Europe might have been like.
The characterization of race doesn't end there, though--as the scene shifts from Nazi Germany to the present, and as Art must suffer the daily trials and tribulations of life with a father permanently scarred by his experiences, Art depicts himself as a mouse as well, a confession that he himself is unable to completely escape the aftermath of the poisoned race relations of the Holocaust. Maybe this makes him a covert racist. But if he is, then who isn't?
Art's involvement in MAUS goes beyond interviewing his father, though. Later in the story we will see that Art was treated in a mental hospital and sees a psychiatrist regularly. As the book cover declares, "MAUS is a story about the survivors of the Holocaust--and of the children who somehow survive the survivors."
The storytelling in MAUS is stellar, and the craftsmanship is as well. The comics medium allows Spiegelman to employ some interesting tricks. For example, whenever Vladek is trying to sneak around, he is portrayed with a pig mask. When Vladek and Anja are trying to escape from the ghetto, Anja, who in real life was easily identifiable as a Jew by her appearance, is drawn with a long tail, while Vladek is not.
In sum, MAUS is a gripping story of his parents' experience during the Holocaust, filled with countless brushes with death, tales of betrayal, and plenty of terrible, graphic illustrations of victims being executed. It is not a history text in the most austere and empirical sense. Rather, it is a confession that the Holocaust defies dispassionate and detached analysis.

Solid Continuation to the Series

Enslaved (The Last Orphans Book 3) picks up right where Book 2 left off. If you haven't read the series from the start - The Last Orphans kindly navigate away as there will be spoilers below.

SERIES RECAP

This YA series is Sci-Fi/Apocalyptic with clean language, but plenty of violence. The first book has a gang-rape scene to set the destructive mood, but that device is only used once in the series thus far. It transitions into a character-driven adventure.

A recap: Something strange happened on Earth as animals turned against their owners and adults were targeted in violent fashion. This "power" killing adults is invisible, doesn't smell, and only attacks when the time is right. In short order, the entire adult population is wiped clean and children are all that is left of humanity. Teens and Tweens are now filling parental roles for younger siblings as well as orphans found.

Shane Tucker, a child of sixteen, quickly finds himself on search and rescue; locating and leading other survivors to safety. He finds Kelly Douglas, his classmate, and together they band together with a rag-tag group of kids searching for answers.

Their quest takes them to Atlanta, where other teen-driven factions control territory as they begin to fight for control of resources. It is here that answers are found and new alliances are made.

The Harvest, Book 2 picks up the story as if the reader hit pause after concluding The Last Orphans. The machine that killed adults is destroyed, but the fight for survival takes on a whole new meaning. Alien technology can be a bitch. Luckily for Shane's group, a rebel faction gathers them up for enhanced training in attempts to thwart Earth's alien take-over.

Now stationed on a remote base, groups of teens from around the world train for a suicide mission - destroy the alien fleet and rebuild Earth. I'll stop the recap here - Book 2 has plenty of action with an epic battle at the end. It is, by far, the largest cliffhanger of all three books.

Okay - Book Three

The alien race isn't so alien to humans. In fact, we are part them - modified to be their slaves long ago. Members of the core group targeting the alien fleet are captured and assimilated (almost) into their army. They are slaves to the master, but maintain their thoughts. Unfortunately, they can't act as they aren't in control of their bodies. Talk about a nightmare!

Others escaped and are working their way back to base to regroup - it is a journey with roadblocks and I'll not give away the story.

There isn't as much action in this round - more character based chapters. I found the book extremely quick to read, but was getting a little burned on the Shane and Kelly remote love-fest. We get it! It does conclude on a positive note - but yet another group enters the story and dramatically changes the game. Although it is a cliff-hanger ending, it feels more conclusive vs. Book 2. Readers can take a breath, relax a bit, and pick up Book 4 when it becomes available without too much revisiting.

It's when you have a good book in your hands

I received a copy of Enslaved from the author, N.W. Harris, for an honest review. The story was my compensation. Nothing else.

You know that feeling. I know you do. It's when you have a good book in your hands. You have followed these characters in two previous books which seemed to go too fast. So, you decide to take your time with the third. Except, the only way to take your time is to just stop reading for a few days. Know what I mean? I thought you did.

Well, that's how it's been for me with Enslaved. Enslaved, is the third installment to a young adult scifi series. The first book was The Last Orphans followed by The Harvest. The story follows a group of teens from a small town who have been fighting for their lives since the first chapter of the first book. There never seems to be a break for the teens, or the reader.

If you've read my previous reviews, you would have heard me say that this series has given me a form of literary ptsd. As messed up as this sounds, that's the only way I can describe this experience. I love these kids. I feel like I've been fighting alongside them from the get go. I have an actual emotional reaction to these characters (something that only a few books achieved). I want them to survive and thrive.

It's because of that that I couldn't tell N.W. Harris no. I had to know what happened.

Enslaved starts where The Harvest ends: with a separation of the team (can't go into detail in case you haven't read it yet... READ IT!). This book is written a tad bit differently than the others. We get to see how the antagonists live, how the enslavement works and feels, and the actions of the main team.

I like that Harris did that. It's important because it gives the reader a base of who we are up against. Yes, we. I am with the kids. Anyways, through the lens of the Annunaki, we see what they are really like. And, they are exactly what I thought (with the exception of other Annunaki who have more going for them). These people are like the Roman Empire. I can see a direct comparison, and yet, there is a slight difference that makes them their own.

The second view is from one of the enslaved kids from the main team (so hard not to give it away!). Can I say body snatchers? Or perhaps Host? It has that feel like the movie Host (yes, I know it's a book. Haven't read it yet.). The teen who is enslaved is conscious. She is there, but she has no control. It's like being in a coma only you can hear and see everything. But you have no control with your heartbeat. No control of your breathing. You can't even blink. You are in a prison.

It's probably the most scary thing that could come from this series. And that's pushing it because I was upset with the first book (God, it's good!). There are only a few things that truly scare me. The imagery of the enslavement is definitely one of them.

Now, I don't want to give too much away, but suffice to say that N.W. Harris ends the book with another cliffhanger. UGH! It is both a curse and a blessing. I don't want the series to end, but I do (in a "I want my kids safe and happy" way). Alas, I will have to wait for the next book.

An Amazing Book

Shane and his friends managed to survive the first major attack against the enemy. They destroyed the alien ships that came to harvest the children of Earth and turn them into slaves. The ship that Kelly was on is the one ship that managed to escape. Shane is determined to do whatever it takes to save Kelly but if he turns his back on his friends he takes the chance of jeopardizing the whole mission.

Kelly’s mind is invaded by the enemy and she is turned into a slave soldier. Any order they give her she will follow even if that order is to kill her friends, her little sister and Shane. As Kelly performs heinous tasks under the directions of her new masters she is trapped and helpless in her own body. With each new direction her sanity and desire to live fade a little more.

Shane is ready to make a rescue attempt as soon as he is home. When he finally gets there it is to find that Kelly is there too commanding an army of human slave soldier and she is determined to make him join her ranks. Now Shane has to see if he can rescue Kelly before she gets to her sister or Kelly just might end up helping enslave the rest of humanity.

This is proving to be a very additive series. With each book the series gets better and better. While readers will be thrilled to find out there is to be another book they will end up disappointed to find out they have to wait for it. The action is pretty much non-stop and makes for a book that readers won’t want to put down for any reason. It is also a series that stays with readers long after they finish each book. It will be interesting to see just where the series ends up and how it gets there. The characters are very well written and move the story along very well. This is definitely one series that should be read.

Surprise! This One Caught Me Right Between The Eyes

Did you ever experience something that afterwards you felt you were destined to experience?

Well reading this book was one of those experiences for me. Now I am a fairly confident person or, at least I thought so prior to taking on this quick little read. However, what I learned was that my definition of confidence was only skimming the surface of what confidence really is and I never understood just how deep and extensive a reach confidence has on all aspects of our lives. I simply didn't give it that much thought. While I see my life as wonderful and I've accomplished a lot, it was no wonder why I felt certain areas of my life were not progressing to the degree that I felt they should be. Hmmm a confidence issue? I would have never believed it in a million years.

Anyway back to the book. The author does a masterful job at not only defining confidence but, then takes you down a path to help you identify your saboteurs and develop "true" confidence.

This book is definitely worth the read. It just may surprise you the way it did me.

In this book you find why some event always happen to you ,because you are not confident enough to deal with them .
I find this very useful in terms of categorizing the confidence ,and the method you use to evalute yourself and find current position of yours in confidence ruler .
