Excellent Colouring book for Adults

I was asked if I would like to participate in a colouring book review program, and as I enjoy colouring I accepted.

The printing is sharp with none of the pages looking faded, nor do any appear to be taken out of children's colohring books. The pictures themselves are either of plants or animal motif's, and have a good range in difficulty from fairly simple vases of flowers to more intricate drawings that cover the entire page. This is the type book I like, as sometimes I enjoy taking a long time to do the entire page, and other times I have much less time to complete it. Sure, I sometimes walk away from it before I am finished, but its nice to work on a picture you know you will finish in that period of time.

If you have not tried an adult colouring book, I encourage you to do so. I had not for years until one was given to me, and I found I enjoyed it so much that I bought what I thought was a large set of coloured pencils - it contained 48. (I now wish I had gone for the larger 72, but in truth I have tried colouring these with my old small set of 12 - and it works fine). May not have the range of shades, but it still looks nice. And more importantly, its fun and relaxing. Remember how it was when you were children and colouring was one of your activities? If you liked it then you will like it now - might even encourage you to draw or paint your own pictures. (It has me).

This would be an excellent choice if you are looking for a gift for someone, or if you just want to try adult colouring for yourself.

Make sure to check the book when you receive it, the first one came with missing print. They replaced it for free, and it seems like a ton of fun to color in!

The Continuity of offices of the early Church

James Burtchaell writes a much-needed history of the roles and responsibilities of leadership in the early Christian churches. Fortunately for most readers, he carefully traces the history of scholarship on Church offices from the Reformation to the twentieth century which reveals how cultural biases of authors have yielded to genuine research into the continuity between the Temple, synagogue and church. Burtchaell's contribution to the discussion is the character of the first century synagogue, its leadership and services, how those roles were translated into Christian communities.

Too often, Protestant leaders and their communities have sustained the biases of the Reformation and German scholarship on Church history. From a European perspective, the righteous rejection of corruption of medieval Roman Catholicism has long been considered legitimate reason for rejection of the priesthood which reformers considered a man-made office, full of lust for greed, power and abuse. Burtchaell's well-crafted scholarship indicates that church offices had their roles and responsibilities in the synagogue and temple. He points out that even in Acts and the Epistles, pride and corruption were snares for those who held office. Somethings are consistent throughout history; people are sinful.

While Burtchaell finds no mention of the offices of bishop or priest in the first century, by the early second century, early church writers are describing an established office and responsibilities. In one instance, Burtchaell defends the absence of written evidence as inconsequential, but in this instance finds it substantial to indicate that priests and bishops were not those designated to consecrate the gifts.

The book is well researched, well written and a good read for those interested in early church history. My only complaint is that, like so many authors, their is only sparce attention given to the histories of Middle Eastern and North African churches where so much of this history was lived, and which has a very different history of clerical humility and service, not one that amassed power, wealth and armies. The presumption of most historians seems to be that the template of the Vatican is the only history of Christian clergy. Christian history both Western and Eastern has a legitimate witness to offer.

From a different perspective, I found it startling that the Sanhedrin was '70', that the Alexandrian synagogue was '70', and that this is consistent with the Eastern Christian understanding that outside of the 12 Apostles, those mentioned in Acts and the Epistles constitute what we call "The Seventy." In the histories of local communities in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean, each of "The Seventy" are recorded as those who were ordained by one of The Twelve Apostles, with laying on of hands, who became 'episkopos' of nascent Christian communities. In addition, Burtchaell's scholarship describes the hellenistic synagogue and early church as conciliar, which the Eastern Church remains to this day. These are examples, from my own perspective, where additional investigation of the Eastern Church might be a worthy addition to this area of scholarship. Although Burtchaell gives some mention of the writings of Church Fathers of the period, including Ireneaus, Polycarp, and others, I'm always disappointed that Orthodoxy's own history and that of its communities is largely ignored and books are Euro-centric. The Western Church abandoned many of the Jewish and synagogue legacies, but the Eastern Church has retained many to this day.

Point: Because the Church was birthed in the context of the synagogue, the leadership structure and happenings of the synagogue were incorporated into the Church. Although there was a set structure, the charismatics lead while the officials presided.

Path: The author begins with four chapters of historical interpretation. The ideas of leaders from the Reformation, the 19th century, the early 20th century, and the last 50 years are all evaluated. The last four chapters discuss the need for a new hypothesis, one which reads history forwards instead of backwards. The final chapter gives his conclusions on the matter: the early church looked like the synagogue, but the Spirit led men were the leaders, no necessarily the officers.

Agreement: I appreciate his desire to see a continuity between the two organizations. Helpful material. Seemingly thorough.

Disagreement: He questions the authorship of James (but places the pastorals early). This is my first real step into synagogue studies, so I need to compare it to others.

An enthralling read for technies and non-techies alike

What impresses me the most about this Blockchain book is how it relates this technology back to current trends in banking, fintech, and how society interacts with technology. All of these things are changing as a result of Blockchain and most people have no idea. The "sharing economy" (think AirBnB, Uber, etc.) is a prime example. This is a major focus in one of the chapters where the author clearly and methodically lays out how Blockchain is completely disrupting even already disruptive services.

Books about technology always walk a fine line between being informative and being boring. This book manages to be detailed while still remaining entertaining for a broad audience. I had some background knowledge of Blockchain and Bitcoin already when I bought this book but I think even if I didn't I still would have understood just about everything the author describes. One of the chapters does get quite technical but it is explained clearly enough that I think even someone still very new to Blockchain would understand at least 90% of what the author is talking about.

The last chapter of the book is the best in my opinion as this is where the author ties everything together and lays out a variety of plausible use cases for Blockchain driven technology in the next few years. There are also lots of examples in that chapter, and throughout the book really, of how current early adopters are using Blockchain to increase efficiency, eliminate middlemen, and offer a wide range of services that were previously not possible without a technology like Blockchain.

The Blockchain Disruption is one of the best tech books I have read. It is fast-paced, it is interesting, and most importantly it thoroughly details a new technology that will define the next generation of technological evolution.

Best of the Blockchain books

I've picked up several of the most popular Blockchain books such as the one by the Tapscott father and son, and read them with mild dissatisfaction. Some would only scratch the surface while others would randomly go down one rabbit hole or another leaving the big picture mostly unexplored.

When the book by Summers was finally released a few weeks ago I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I had the opportunity to see the author speak at a conference a couple of years ago and was impressed by his vision for the future of Blockchain and his way of applying his expertise about Blockchain to the real world to see how this technology will shape our future.

I could not have enjoyed this book more, and in my opinion it is the best of the current bunch of Blockchain books. It is written in a way that is completely understandable for someone of even the most modest technical background, however it never shies away from getting deep into the technical details of how Blockchain technology functions.

What I love most about this book is that it is relentlessly focused on what Blockchain will do here in the real world. This isn't a book that is out to theorize for the sake of theorizing, or dicuss purely technical qualities while leaving their life-altering impact aside. This is one of the very fe Blockchain books that does justice to this amazing technology by exploring the true context in which this technology will operate and offering a credible look into what the world will look like in the not too distant future.

Widespread implementation of Blockchain is right around the corner, and it is going to be huge. No author I know of articulates the true impact of Blockchain better than Summers. If you are only going to read one Blockchain book, definitely make this one!

I'm impressed of this great guidebook! This book is a perfect read for people who barely have an idea about block chain but heard and wanted to learn about it. This book is a must read to understand and have ideas on all the promises of the Blockchain Technology and what is already being done today. To me, this is such an very useful book that I can highly recommend to others.
