An amazing resource

I have fallen out of the habit of writing reviews on Amazon due to the fact that my own studies usually mean the time consuming nature of taking the time to write one is prohibitive, nonetheless I was slightly annoyed by the reviewers that gave this volume 4 stars and felt compelled to note, for any who care to read my review, to whole-heartedly recommend this volume, which is not only a superb resource for extending one's education in Koine Greek beyond New Testament literature, but also allows one an initial approach to the sometimes daunting Church Fathers. Thus if one wants a review of the book, please disregard this paragraph and jump to the second which provides material overview, this first paragraph serves a counter to those who downgraded the volume from 5 to four stars or lower. Certainly the reviewers here are entitled to their opinion, and if they feel this genuinely deserves 4 stars, not 5, then so be it. One would hope, however, that the reasons for their ratings would be equally forthcoming and cogent, but I felt this is definitely not the case and their reasons for downgrading it from 5 were unfair and might dissuade others from utilizing this volume to improve their greek skills while simultaneously gaining an initial knowledge of some of the fathers. One reviewer comments they would much rather have full texts rather than excerpts--true, this would be preferable but entirely misses the point of why this volume was compiled. It is not a resource for exhaustive research or even for full appreciation of the individual texts, but is rather a teaching guide for Greek which allows one to step outside the bounds of the bible. To downgrade it for the simple fact that it is not what one wants is absurd and explicitly ignores the stated goals of the editor. If one downgrades the volume it should be in regards to a failure of the stated intentions, not the perennially ridiculous criticism of arbitrary expectations not being met (Rowan Williams aptly calls these superficial criticisms "the crutch of hasty reviews"--they are cheap to come by and serve as space fillers parading themselves as thoughtful criticisms).

Anyway enough of that "review philosophizing," so we can cut to the bottom line: this volume is fantastic. It provides brief excerpts from many writers (which ranges from the easy Didache, to the more difficult Cappadocian Father Gregory the Theologian (Gregory of Nazianzus) Clement, Athanasius, to even some of the Desert Fathers and the wonderful poetry of Symeon the New Theologian) which not only gives one a glimpse of sections of their works often telling to the main points of their theology, but even more helpfully these sections are rated by Whitacre in terms of their reading difficulty in Greek on a scale of 1-5, 5 being very difficult. But fear not the "5" rating (of which only a few, Justin Martyr, Nazianzen, and Clement, and a few sections of Athanasius garner straight up 5's, most get ranges of 3-4) for Whitacre provides, much like Reader's versions of the New Testament, ample footnotes which are not only exhaustive in vocabulary, but parse and give grammatical notes and glosses as well. If this weren't enough, English translations are provided in the back (though these are somewhat wooden, this actually may help those still transitioning from Biblical koine) making this an incredibly friendly and helpful guide for a large range of people---from those still in first semester greek to those who like myself have been reading Greek for years but are looking for accessible opportunities to flex Greek muscles outside the New Testament without the labor of hauling a lexicon and looking up every other word while reading Patrologia Graecae or other less accessible Greek sources. On top of this brief biographical and theological information is given on each author or book, contextualizing the selection and fitting it within the ever important historical context. In short: if you are learning Greek, or have learned Greek and are looking for vehicles to exercise your ability, this volume is a must have.

A nice beginner's sampling of Patristic Greek

This book is an introductory Greek reader of the early Church Fathers, with heavy annotations for the beginner. It's aimed at students who have completed a year of basic Greek, probably in Koine, but a year of Attic would be more than enough preparation to use this book. (I have a few years of Attic experience, and the intermediate-level texts in this book were very simple to me.) Whitacre presents relatively short selections from a variety of patristic authors, and ranks them according to difficulty, so it's easy to know where to start. There are copious footnotes which parse and define all but the most common forms, provide syntax information, and also provide page/paragraph numbers for common reference works. Each selection also has a brief introduction with historical information about the author and the text. The back of the book has literal translations of all the texts, as well as a glossary and principal parts.
I think this is an excellent and useful book. It provides a user-friendly introduction and sampling of authors who don't get wide coverage in non-specialized Greek classes. There are more than enough notes to help beginning students with the most difficult forms and concepts. The translations at the back of the book are a convenient way to check your work. I usually prefer end-notes instead of footnotes, because with footnotes there is too great a temptation to be lazy and look down instead of thinking about a form, but this can easily be mitigated with post-it notes.
I think a previous reviewer was unfair in his criticism of this book, that it should focus on one author instead of such a wide range. Yes, it would be nice to have annotated versions of all the authors here, but this book is intended to give a sampling of the different thoughts and styles of a range of patristic authors. I've really enjoyed working through such a diverse collection of authors, and I think most beginning and intermediate students will too.
My one complaint is that the binding on the book isn't very good, and the pages will start falling out with minimal bending. This is an all-too-common problem these days.

Relevant Reading for the Theology Student Learning Greek

This is an excellent book for theology and/or patristics students desirous of learning New Testament (Koine) Greek. In many programs, the Greek readers will focus on texts from the New Testament, which is fine, but at some point, theology students will need to master certain Greek words as used by the Early Church Fathers, such as Saint Cyril, to fully understand the context and underlying theological point of the text. This book definitely helps in this respect.

Profoundly effecting. Horrifying, Loving.

I gave this four stars, only because the story is something of a tragedy, not because of lack of quality of the writing.
Simply put, Erika Moak is literary genius. If you've ever read her masterpiece Eudeamon, I don't know anyone who's ever read that masterpiece and not said it's the finest science fiction story they've ever read, and I've told the author this myself. She has talent. Pure, raw, unadulterated talent. However that talent takes intense forms sometimes, and this story is no exception.

This is a dark tale. A story of abuse, redemption, loss, love, and torture. This has real nitty gritty dark, not-pretty torture in it. But Erika Moak has a talent for taking the darkest, most obscene stuff, and finding a rose and love within it. You feel almost perverse for reading it, but also in seeing the love (and it's real love) in it.

She understands human relationships and emotions in a way that's very rarely seen in an author.

Whether you can take this story, is another matter. This story is not for the feint of heart, and may take an iron stomach.
It's very well written, and doesn't lack for talent. Whether you can take the story that's within is another matter.

It's 60 pages, so it's only one evening's read. It will move you. Fill you with love, and also horrify you at times.

It's definitely a ride. If you can take it, you're getting a taste of some very fine writing.

It spoke to me personally, and helped me. I found it helped me move through some things. I definitely think anybody who reads this will be effected. However it may be in different ways. Some may be profoundly moved to self-reflection about their own past, or filled with the reminder of the own person they love. Others maybe horrified and wonder WTF they just read!? Or a bit of both.

This is a ride, but it's a talented ride, and filled with love, and sorrow and perversity, and love again.

Whether it's worth it for you, I cannot say. This effected me I'll say that.

Ouch!

I don't know why I thought there might be a happy ending. Instead, it reminded me of the 80-page Mord-Sith scene in "Wizard's First Rule". Not my cup of tea, but if you liked that and don't mind a depressing ending, give it a go!

About the Author
Richard L. Scheaffer, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Florida, received his Ph.D. in statistics from Florida State University. Accompanying a career of teaching, research and administration, Dr. Scheaffer has led efforts on the improvement of statistics education throughout the school and college curriculum. Co-author of five textbooks, he was one of the developers of the Quantitative Literacy Project that formed the basis of the data analysis strand in the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also led the task force that developed the AP Statistics Program, for which he served as Chief Faculty Consultant. Dr. Scheaffer is a Fellow and past president of the American Statistical Association, a past chair of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and an advisor on numerous statistics education projects.

Avoid the negative reviews

Remember, folks: mathematical statistics is much deeper and more conceptual than the plug-and-play that is sophomore-level intro statistics. If you don't have a mathematical background, then this book (and in all honesty, a mathematical statistics course) is NOT for you.

I first encountered this book while working at the Federal Trade Commission (i.e., not in an academic setting), and found it so clear and easy to understand that I bought a copy for myself. I will concede that you can't come at this book without an understanding of at least integral calculus (and since so many people get turned off by Algebra, well...), so I suspect a lot of the negative reviews here are written by people who jumped in the deep end of the pool without having a few swimming lessons. If you know the calculus and basic set theory, the book is exceedingly easy to follow.

I wholly recommend this book, provided you have the prerequisite skills necessary to use it.

Beware!! Not the same as the hardcover version!

The numbering of the end of chapter exercises in the Kindle edition is NOT the same as the numbering of the exercises in the hardcover book. This has cost me several points on assignments for having completed and turned in the wrong problems. I have to make copies of the end of chapter problems from someone else's book. This is time consuming, irritating, and increases the functional cost of the Kindle edition.

Buyer Beware...

I appreciate that the authors have tried to write an easy-to-read text. In fact, its clarity might be the only good characteristic, as it's marred by the following problems:

(1) Shallowness. The text is shallow. The extraordinarily easy problems fail to challenge the reader's mind, and the descriptions/lessons, while easy to read, aren't as informing as random Google search results for similar topics. That is, you'd get more simply googling statistics lessons rather than buying this book.

(2) It's an international version. This might not be a problem if you're learning statistics on your own, but if you're buying this book for class, double check the problems with the same text your professor has. I've lost points on my homework because the problems didn't match up, despite the fact that the professor listed this very same book on the syllabus.

(3) It's expensive. Not worth anything *near* the used prices you see. $180? $190? I wouldn't pay $100 for a book this shallow.

I know my opinion sounds harsh, but it's only so that others don't make the same mistake in buying the book I bought.

Compelling, gripping and will NOT let you go

As soon as I finished this book, I tweeted: ‘Wow. Now I have to find the words to review this in more than that one word’. I’ve left it a few days and the story is still firmly with me.

What the blurb says:

DI Ray Stevens is tasked with seeking justice for a mother who is living every parent's worst nightmare. Determined to get to the bottom of the case, it begins to consume him as he puts both his professional and personal life on the line.

Which rather cleverly (and from the perspective of someone who has now finished it), actually tells you everything and nothing all at once. At more than one point in this novel I thought I knew what I was reading and what was coming; each time I was wrong.

This novel just breaks all the rules - brilliantly and over and over again! I couldn’t put it down, despite the fact (and probably partly because) it is an intensely uncomfortable read for a variety of reasons. The first of which becomes clear very early on in the story and which I am therefore going to tell you about; I promise it will be the ONLY spoiler in this review.

The story opens with the tragic accident referred to in the blurb: ‘hit-and-run in Fishponds, guv. Five-year-old boy killed’. If, like me, you routinely avoid novels that might make you feel sad, I promise you won’t regret giving this one a go. Although the accident is the catalyst for the novel, there are SO many layers to this story: ‘I’ve told him more than I ever intended to, but I can’t tell him everything. If I do, he’ll leave, and I’ll have no one to stop me from falling’. Sooooo many questions!

Initially, the story moves between that of DI Stevens and his team investigating the accident, and that of those involved with Jacob (the five year old boy) himself. The police sections (ironically) serve as a palate cleanser in-between the faster-paced, higher-tension parts of the story. But without this part of the story, the reader would quite probably be holding their breath continually…

I honestly can’t remember the last novel I read that was comparable in terms of emotional experience. I felt all the same emotions as Jenna, deeply and compellingly. From grief: ‘Such a small impact on the world, yet the very centre of my own… The grief I feel is so physical it seems impossible that I am still living’; to anger and disgust: ‘You can’t do anything by yourself, Jennifer’; to guilt: ‘Each time a wave of fear hits me, I remind myself what I did, and that I have no right to be frightened’; and finally, complete and utter fear: ‘I will find you… Wherever you’ve gone to, I’ll find you. And then I will come for you’. Just imagine welcoming the idea of Prison, simply for the security and safety it provides. Chilling.

Later on in the story, the narrative is split further between Jenna and Ian, her husband. I would love to ask Clare Mackintosh whether writing Ian’s parts in the first person were as difficult to imagine and write as they are for the reader to read? Just incredible - infuriating, jarring and brutally honest.

I can’t talk in specifics about themes and events without spoiling the story, so I won’t. Suffice it to say, this novel will NOT let you go. Just read it.

Brilliant.

First of all I have no problem saying that this is the best psychological thriller I have read this year, no prevarication. For sheer addictive reading and utterly compelling character arcs, a very emotional storyline and some exquisite twists and turns throughout I loved this one very much.

Jenna has retreated from life after a tragic accident left her bereft – but in the small Welsh community she ends up in there is hope of a new start and a brighter future. However some things are difficult to let go of and as Jenna attempts to move forwards there are things pulling her back into her past, things she must face if she is ever to find happiness again.

This is a totally haunting read -Jenna is a brilliantly drawn character who you will feel for every step of the way. To suffer as she has is unimaginable, and putting the rest aside this is a very emotional and heart wrenching look at how unexpected tragedy can torment us and affect our very soul. The heart of the novel is right there in Jenna as she struggles with the mundane day to day and attempts to move on, her attitudes and expectations of the new people in her life are very well described and utterly authentic.

Added to that very human story is a terrific mystery element that keeps you avidly turning the pages to find out the truth of the matter – Jenna aside there is a terrific range of characters to follow along with as things become untangled and slowly but surely we are lead towards a brilliantly poignant and touching conclusion.

Overall then a truly magnificent tale and one that I have no trouble at all recommending to everyone – If you love reading you will love this. Simple.

Not a great read

This book started out GREAT! Terrific writing, interesting story, but devolved into a spousal abuse tale and a not very interesting one. All the elements of a good story were sort of thrown away and the plot lines became obvious. A predictable love story, a predictable result. Too bad. I was really enjoying the first half.

About the Author
Dr. Steven A. Beebe is Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies at Texas State University. He served as Chair of the Department of Communication Studies for 28 years and as Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication for 25 years. Steve is an author or co-author of twelve books (with multiple editions totaling more than 70 books), more than 50 articles and book chapters, as well as over 150 papers and presentations at professional conferences. Steve’s communication books have been used at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the world, making him one of the top communication textbook authors in the United States. Steve served as President of the National Communication Association (NCA), the largest professional communication association in the world, in 2013.

Susan J. Beebe was an award-winning faculty member in the Department of English at Texas State University from 1988 to her retirement in 2014. As Director of Lower-Division Studies in English for 11 years, she directed the first-year writing and sophomore literature programs and helped to train and mentor hundreds of graduate teaching assistants. Sue’s professional interests and expertise encompass both oral and written communication. She has co-authored with Steven Beebe several communication textbooks used at more than a thousand universities worldwide. In addition, she has published articles, conference papers, and teaching materials in both English and communication studies.

Misleading "Advertising" Headers

Book is fine but advertisement of this product is untrustworthy because it clearly says Public Speaking Handbook Plus NEW mycommunication lab which it does not have. I only received the book and there is no access code for the communication lab. These misleading headings should not be allowed to be used.

This is a short-hand, easy to reference version of the full sized Rosen's. It is incredibly useful and easy to use. Great for use in the ED while on a shift or for reading quickly on a subject that you want to learn more about.
